The incident happened after the taxi driver collected a fair on Ebenezer Street, West Bromwich, on Thursday, March 27.
The driver managed to pull over in Wednesbury, where he discreetly alerted West Midlands Police officers to the situation.
The force said officers 'arrived on the scene quickly' where they arrested the man in the area shortly afterwards. A knife was also found in the area.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We've charged a man after a taxi driver was threatened with a gun in Sandwell.
"Rasharn Russell has been charged with kidnap, possession of an imitation firearm, a knife, attempted robbery and making threats to kill."
The 19-year-old, from Walsall, appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court on Saturday, March 29, and is due to appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court at a future date.
