Not unusual to read about the thefts, but slightly more unusual to read about the likes of this :-o

Menace who targeted taxi drivers jailed and banned from entering two areas of Newcastle

Tony Hall repeatedly carried out attacks on taxis and other vehicles in Heaton, Jesmond, Fenham and the West End of Newcastle

A prolific offender who carried out a series of attacks on taxis and other vehicles in Newcastle suburbs has been jailed and banned from entering two areas of the city.

Tony Hall persistently targeted Tyneside taxi drivers, regularly smashing windows and stealing from their cars in Heaton, Jesmond, Fenham and the West End of Newcastle. Drivers and their employees were left with repair bills totalling thousands.

After an investigation involving Northumbria Police and Newcastle City Council's licensing department, Hall has been slapped with a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO). He will be prevented from entering Heaton and Jesmond for the next two years on his release from prison.

He is also not allowed to be in public with his face covered and is prohibited from touching any vehicle he doesn't have permission to. He is banned from carrying wood, stones and sticks in public places; with the aim of preventing him from smashing windows.

Should Hall, of Northcote Street, Newcastle, flout the terms of his order, he risks being further arrested and given jail time. The CBO was granted at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Thursday, March 20, alongside a 32-week jail sentence after the 36-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of theft, fraud, and possession of crack cocaine.

Inspector Anita Morgan, or Northumbria Police's Newcastle Area Command, said she was pleased to have secured the order against Hall. She said: "He has caused misery for a number of victims which is why we have carried out a wide-ranging investigation into his criminality.

"To put it bluntly, he has completely exhausted all chances he has been offered to turn this behaviour around. Instead of taking the opportunities presented to him to work with ourselves and partners, Hall has continued to cause a nuisance and repeatedly break the law – at the expense of residents and businesses.

"No-one deserves to have to put up with this type of behaviour while going about their day-to-day lives and our hope is that now these measures have been put in place we can manage Hall’s offending more effectively. If you do see Hall somewhere he shouldn’t be, then please get in touch."

Should have really just used the Northumbria Police press release instead of the Chronicle's rehash, but can't be bothered changing it now. It looks pretty similar anyway, but couldn't help notice this:

Who knows why the Chronicle has changed 'employers' to 'employees', but of course both will be incorrect, since that's the language of PAYE etc, as opposed to self-employment.

Anyway, even ignoring the technical aspect of the words, not really clear what either version is getting at. Maybe the police version is alluding to owner-drivers and fleet cars, or something like that, but who knows :?
