This guy sounds so blootered it's just about possible to think he did think the driver was trying to attack him.
But 'following him up the garden path' is a potential goldmine for jokes
Man pulled knife and threatened to kill taxi driverA DRUNKEN man pulled a knife on a taxi driver and threatened to kill him during an incident in Larkfield, a court has heard. Anthony McVey brandished a blade at the man and attempted to strike him with it at a property on Stafford Road on December 5 last year.
The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to an assault charge at Greenock Sheriff Court this week.
He had been drinking at a pub in the town centre of Greenock earlier that evening, with staff booking a taxi to take him home.
McVey, who was described as being ‘heavily intoxicated’ at the time, asked to be taken to an address on Stafford Road.
When the car arrived at the property, he told the driver he did not have money for the fare and indicated that he would collect cash from house.
Having agreed to this, the man followed McVey up the garden path which led to the front door.
McVey then pulled out a black-handled knife and began ‘swiping’ towards the complainer.
He stated that he would ‘kill’ the driver – who then ran back to his car and locked the doors.
McVey, who is currently remanded at HMP Low Moss, followed him and struck one of the vehicle’s windows with the blade before he drove off.
The incident was reported to police, who subsequently cordoned off Stafford Road for a period.
A seven-centimetre (2.7-inch) blade recovered in the garden of the property was sent for analysis, with McVey’s DNA being found on its handle.
Defence solicitor Mark Chambers told the court that his client had previously been the victim of an attack on his doorstep.
He said McVey’s actions were the result of not knowing who was behind him on the garden path, and ‘suddenly’ being confronted by a ‘dark figure’.
Mr Chambers added: “He deeply regrets his conduct. Sobriety allows him to look at things differently.”
Sheriff James Varney described the offence as ‘serious’ and called for social work reports to be produced before sentencing McVey.
He was remanded in custody until the case next calls on April 16
