Police are investigating the death of a Hertfordshire taxi driver as a murder after his body was found in a torched car earlier this year.

Officers were called to a field near the B659 Langford Road, Henlow, around 7.30am on February 6. They found a body, confirmed to be that of 47-year-old Jesbir Singh Khela, and had previously treated the death as unexplained.

The victim, known to some as Jessy, was from Letchworth.

Police are now treating this incident as a murder after they carried out “extensive enquiries”.

Detectives used post mortem, a full examination of the vehicle remains and statements from the people who knew the victim as evidence before launching their murder investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Inwood from Bedfordshire Police said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jesbir, as this has been a very distressing time for them.

“We are continuing to work hard to establish the circumstances around what happened to Jesbir and would urge anyone who may have any information to get in touch with us.

“If you knew Jesbir and have information which could help, or if you witnessed suspicious activity on or around Langford Road overnight on Thursday 6 February, we want to hear from you.”

The force urged anyone with information “no matter how small it may seem” to come forward.

People are asked to report any information via Bedfordshire Police’s website quoting Operation Acle.

If you wish to provide information anonymously you can do so by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police have released a CCTV image of a man taken the day before he was found dead in a burned-out car

The destroyed Skoda Octavia was found by Bedfordshire Police in a field off the B659 Langford Road on 6 February shortly before 07:30 GMT.

The body of 47-year-old Jesbir Singh Khela, known to people as Jessy, from Letchworth, Hertfordshire, was found in the driver's seat and the force is treating his death as murder.

Det Insp Justine Jenkins, said: "[We] are again appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious on the evening of Wednesday 5 February into the early hours of Thursday 6 February to come forward.

"Even the smallest detail - something that may have seemed insignificant at the time - could prove vital to our investigation."

CCTV released by the force showed the 47-year-old and his vehicle at the Esso petrol station in Norton Way, Letchworth, at about 13:22 on 5 February.

The force added that at the time the vehicle may not have been displaying its taxi roof sign.

The car left central London shortly after 01:00 on 6 February and had been travelling towards Letchworth via the A41 Watford Way and Barnet Way, before it was found in Langford, police said.

Det Insp Justine Jenkins, said: "Six months have passed since Jesbir's death, and our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones as they continue to come to terms with their loss."

The force said a man in his 30s was arrested in June in connection with the incident and has since been released on bail while inquiries continue.

That's the BBC report above - I would normally use the Beds Police version for stuff like this, but oddly enough the page doesn't actually display the image (or at least it wasn't displaying when I posted the article above - maybe it's a temporary software glitch, or whatever).

sounds to me as if they have little to go on the fire would have destroyed any forensic evidence

I would be amazed if they don't know the full story.

The problem is getting enough evidence to charge, prosecute, and convict.

New £20,000 reward in hunt for killer after taxi driver, 47, found dead in burnt out cab a year ago

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/38155302/ ... ab-killer/

A FRESH reward has been issued in the year-long the hunt for a killer after a taxi driver was found dead in a burnt out cab.

Jesbir Singh Khela, 47, was tragically found dead in the driver’s seat of his Skoda Octavia on Thursday, February 6, last year.

Known to many as Jessy, the taxi driver was found just before 7.30am in a field off the B659 Langford Road, near Langford, Bedfordshire.

A year on from the tragedy a fresh appeal is being issued with Jessy’s killer yet to be identified.

The tragic death was initially treated as unexplained but it was later determined the cabbie had been killed.

Following a forensic postmortem and full examination of the vehicle remains, as well as statements from the people who knew Jessy, cops opened a murder investigation.

Since the killing seven arrests have been made in connection with the incident, but no-one has been charged.

Independent charity Crimestoppers is now offering a £20,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Cops are also renewing their appeal, asking anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward.

Providing details on the case, the force said it was determined that the taxi left central London shortly after 1am on the morning of February 6.

The car was travelling towards Letchworth via the A41.

At the time, police say the vehicle may not have been displaying the taxi sign on its roof.

In August last year the force shared CCTV images as part of a renewed appeal for information that could assist their investigation.

The footage showed Jessy and his taxi the afternoon before the body of the cabbie, originally from Hertfordshire, was discovered.

It was filmed at the Esso Petrol Station in Letchworth, at 1.22pm on Wednesday, February 5.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Inwood, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: “A year on from the tragic death of Jessy, his family and friends still have many unanswered questions.

“We know that someone out there will have information that could help us find out what happened in the lead up to his death.

“Please do come forward and tell us what you know.

“If you don’t want to speak to the police, you can speak to independent charity Crimestoppers, which is separate to the police.

“They will not share any of your details with us, and they are offering a reward of £20,000 for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.”

Who knows, maybe the £20,000 will loosen the tongues of those not involved, but aware of who were. :-$
