Wonder how the North Wales coroner would have dealt with this crazy? :-o

Anyway, I assume the 'pants' in the headline are the USA type. Either that or he has very big pants

And 'difficult childhood' alert

Callum Cain drunkenly attacked the taxi with the sledgehammer in Sunderland city centre

A drunken thug left a taxi driver terrified after pulling a sledgehammer out of his pants and attacking his car while demanding the keys.

The victim was working as a taxi driver, based in Newcastle, when, just after 5am one morning in June 2023, he dropped a passenger off in Sunderland city centre.

He became aware of an intoxicated man staggering about and the man - Callum Cain - stepped out in front of the taxi on the A183. The cabbie slowed down to let him pass but he stopped in front of the car and put both hands on the bonnet.

Recorder Richard Stubbs at Newcastle Crown Court, said: "At that point, he could see you were carrying a sledgehammer inside your pants, about two-and-a-half feet long with a wooden handle."

Another man appeared on the scene and tried to push Cain away and desist but he refused. Recorder Stubbs said: "You removed the hammer from your trousers and repeatedly struck the car's windscreen with it.

"Understandably, (the victim) was upset and asked you to stop. He reversed but you continued to run towards the vehicle.

"He heard you shout for the keys, before you turned your attention towards another vehicle." The court heard dashcam footage shows Cain repeatedly hitting the car with the sledgehammer.

He fled the scene after spotting an ambulance nearby but was soon arrested and still had the hammer.

The victim said he was left scared and shocked. His car was left off the road for a time and it cost £1,156 to repair the damage and he was left with further expenses of around £400.

Recorder Stubbs said: "This was an isolated victim, a lone taxi driver going about his business in the early hours of the morning. This was a persistent attack."

Cain, 23, of Horizon Apartments, Sunderland, who has 22 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery, criminal damage and having an offensive weapon. He was jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Nick Lane, defending, said: "He would wish me to apologise publicly. He recognises this must have been a worrying incident.

"He was intoxicated to the point he has no real recollection of the incident or his motivation at the time. It's his case he came upon the hammer but he accepts he had it on his person and used it"

Mr Lane added that Cain has a learning difficulty and mental and physical health issues having suffered a difficult childhood.
