Huddersfield taxi drivers suspended over faulty cars during police sting

Cabbies in Huddersfield have been given immediate suspensions after police discovered vehicle defects.

Several vehicles were pulled over on Halifax Road, Edgerton, during an operation on May 8 by West Yorkshire Police along with Kirklees Council and the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency.

Details of the operation were revealed this week by West Yorkshire Police. Of 23 private hire vehicles checked, two drivers were given immediate suspensions which means they cannot work until their vehicle is fixed.

Two cab drivers were given 'rectification sheets' for not complying with regulations, with four handed vehicle defect rectification scheme notice for registration plate issues. Four drivers were given 'words of advice' for displaying registration plates bought online which were not compliant with the law.

Other law-breaking drivers were also caught up in the operation. A Ford C-Max was found to have been stolen from Doncaster in November 2024. One vehicle was given an immediate prohibition notice which prevented the owner from driving away.

Four were given delayed prohibition notices, giving them a week to sort out the issue. Two cars were found to have defective air bags.

Well in view of what I've been saying about press portrayals of stuff like this, and that the press in my manor highlighted an illegal number plate in the stuff about the catastrophically dangerous fleet uncovered in our annual inspections, the stuff above about number plates caught my attention :-o

Because it just doesn't ring true [-(

...so I eventually found the source (the West Yorkshire Police online stuff is very messy; this is from the WYPHuddersfield Facebook page), and this is it below. Apart from the bit I've highlighted in different colours, it's as per the original. And the layout is very important, so in fact maybe better to view the original, as per the link below:

So basically the press report has attributed the stuff at the bottom about number plate issues to the private hire stuff, but in fact I'd put money on it actually being about cars generally. I mean, how many 'taxi' stop checks do we read about where there are as many number plate issues as that, if any at all? And, strangely, if you follow the press logic here, you would attribute the trade plate issues to PHVs as well, but it's not even mentioned in the article. But that's maybe the main giveaway - what are the chances of two out of 23 PHVs stopped having trade plate issues? :-s

In fact, what are the chances of cars generally having as many number plate issues as that? Well, that's easy - if you use a set of daftie number plates because you want to be seen, or you're driving around with trade plates when you shouldn't be, then it's easy for police and DVSA folks to spot you and pull you over :lol: =D>

So I'd guess the stuff highlighted in mauve below should actually be after the text in brown. Thus the number plate stuff is attributable to the 'other law breaking drivers' rather than the PHVs.

Therefore 23 PHVs were stopped; two were suspended, and two were given rectification notices :-o

Apart from that, there's no other information about the PHVs stopped [-(
