Even without looking at her photo, not that difficult to work out that the councillor here might be a member of the 'lanyard class' To some extent she's right - I'd guess the Beemer was doing a good bit more than 20mph On the other hand, maybe if they invested in policing to do something about the craziest drivers rather than ludicrously disproportionate 20mph limits and suchlike, then that might help For example, the whole of St Andrews has been made 20mph recently. But they do zilch about the likes of the bikers who recently passed me at at least 60 in a 40 zone, and I'd guess were probably up to 100mph or so in the 60 zone by the time I'd lost sight of them. Or the likes of the takeaway in the town that parks its car on double yellows every day and night, and in fact last year for a couple of months it wasn't even MoTd (Better not name the takeway - you know, that might prejudice a fair trial, or whatever )And, of course, no need at all to mention the above-the-law boy racer brigade Anyway, I digress... Oxford: BMW smashes into taxi on quiet residential street https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/25202 ... on-street/ A BMW smashed into a taxi car on a tree-lined residential street on Thursday night. Image: Emma Garnett/Oxford Mail Pictures show the front of the white BMW and the back of the black taxi cab heavily damaged with both drivers subsequently taken to hospital after the crash in Headington's Morrell Avenue. Police and ambulance services attended the scene with county councillor Emma Garnett also present. Image: Emma Garnett/Oxford Mail The Green party representative of the Parks ward said: “A BMW driver has rear-ended a taxi on Morrell Avenue this evening, the day after the local residents' speed watch group met with Councillor Alex Powell and me to discuss how we can get measures in to tackle dangerous driving.” She added: “I am extremely relieved that no one was seriously injured. "However, had anyone been walking on either pavement at the time, they would have been crushed between the car and the wall.” Ms Garnett referenced an ongoing campaign by the Morrell Avenue Area Residents Association for speed cameras and a bus gate to be put in place. She added: “We need road safety measures here. Now. “Also, for the love of God can we fund our public services properly? "The two police officers did sterling work – but they were the only police car in Oxford and had 20 other urgent matters to attend to. “The taxi driver's wife had to drive him to the hospital because the ambulance didn't arrive. “An ambulance did finally happen to pass – though it wasn't the one called out – and took the BMW driver to hospital. "I wish him a speedy recovery and that he is never again involved in a car crash.” Image: Emma Garnett/Oxford Mail Ms Garnett called for a “thorough investigation” into the crash, including how it happened and whether any illegality – such as breaking of the 20mph speed limit – occurred. She added that she was grateful for the work of emergency services at the scene. She said: “I'd like to thank the police officers for their hard work and my residents for sorting out traffic management, providing chairs and video evidence, and for all their campaigning to tackle dangerous driving. “We need safety measures now. Not after a fatality.” Image: Emma Garnett/Oxford Mail The councillor has called on police and Matthew Barber, the police and crime commissioner for Thames Valley, to help address the issues. In a public post, she said: "I hear Thames Valley Police hasn't installed a speed camera in Oxford since 1998. Matthew Barber, this needs to change. Will you come and meet with me and residents?" Thames Valley Police has been contacted for comment about the incident as has Mr Barber, the police and crime commissioner. |

This is where it happened - you can even see the yellow Beetle the HC ended up beside, while the Beemer ended up on the other side of the road. So by the looks of the road, the 20mph limit and the extent of the damage, I'd guess the Beemer driver was an utter crazy, and the kind of driver the system tends to ignore unless he triggers a speed camera or something like this happens https://www.google.com/maps/place/191+M ... So the road links the oxford bypass to the town centre which means it is an obvious rat run. |
