There's advertorial and there's advertorial

I mean, you can just about tell from the headline that this is going to be a tad excruciating, and it doesn't disappoint :-o

And talk about padding it out. I had to go for a rest while trying to get this on here

Fortunately the photos are a bit big to display on here, so just links. But never sure tats, t-shirts, jeans and stubble are a good look for this kind of thing. But maybe the tenor of the pieces suggest the whole thing has nothing to do with that kind of stuff...

Why demand for Elgin cabs means C&R Taxis keeps getting bigger despite owner wanting to stay small

https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/bu ... ohn-milne/

John Milne also opens up about why weekends are no longer peak times and how he plans to compete against Uber.

https://wpcluster.dctdigital.com/wp-con ... 40x564.jpg

C and R Taxis slashed their Elgin taxi fleet from 22 cars to only six vehicles during Covid just to survive the pandemic.

Despite the pain of going through the ordeal, it was enough to give the new owner of the business an idea of how he wanted to run it – with a small, nimble and agile feet.

At the time, long-time taxi driver John Milne had only been at the head of the company for barely a year, although he had been manager since 2017.

Five years on from lockdown though C&R Taxis has grown to 36, soon to be 37, cars with an expansion fuelled by Elgin’s growing population.

https://wpcluster.dctdigital.com/wp-con ... 40x564.jpg

It’s a growth that John hadn’t expected, but one he has embraced as the years have passed.

The Press and Journal caught a lift to C&R Taxis’ base in Elgin on the Chanonry industrial estate to find out the reasons for the expansion, as well as;

    • How the increasing size of Elgin is increasing the demand for taxis.
    • Why C&R Taxis don’t rely on the traditional Friday and Saturday night trips from Elgin town centre for bookings.
    • And how the firm hopes to stave off the potential threat of Uber should the firm launch in Moray.

Why C&R Taxis couldn’t stay small for long

After a 14-year career as a taxi driver, John joined C&R Taxis initially as manager before doing a deal with the previous ownership to take over.

When the Covid pandemic hit less than a year later the firm had to slash its fleet just to survive with the rest of the drivers furloughed.

The six remaining drivers found their day-to-day job changing with runs to pick-up click-and-collect shopping from Asda replacing late night pub runs.

John said: “At that point we thought this is great, a smaller company is so much better.

https://wpcluster.dctdigital.com/wp-con ... 40x564.jpg

“Our thoughts then were to stay small because it’s so much easier to handle and manage.

“We’re five years on from Covid now and we’re now at 36 cars, so staying small didn’t stay for long.

“We’re almost double where we started originally. In the last three years we’ve taken over two companies, Elite Taxis and 247 Cars, and acquired a phone number of a third.

“I think we’ve grown because the company is so long-standing. The previous owner Roddie did an excellent job growing it, and we’ve progressed it.

“It’s the repetitive and repeat custom that is keeping that growth going.”

Growing community fuelling demand for taxis

There’s no getting around it, Elgin isn’t as small as it used to be and large housing developments to the north and south mean the town is only going to become more spread out.

With other public transport options limited, it means many are turning to taxis to get about.

C&R Taxis has invested in a range of cars for wheelchairs and those with other mobility issues to help those unable to cover the larger distances.

https://wpcluster.dctdigital.com/wp-con ... 40x564.jpg

John said: “Elgin is getting bigger, it’s growing. With the number of houses they are putting up it’s getting a longer walk to town for some people.

“Some people just can’t walk to town because they’re in a wheelchair or have other disabilities.

“We’ve got an array of vehicles now, we’ve got minibuses, wheelchair motors, just to keep up with demand for what people need.

“Elgin growing though is the main thing that is keeping the demand for taxis up.

“I know some people would like to see Uber in. Is one of our next moves to an app? We need to look at it.”

How C&R Taxis plan to modernise to stave off Uber threat

Uber arrived in the north-east last year with the US firm offering rides in Aberdeen for the first time.

Its arrival was controversial amidst fears it could disrupt the market and lead to some drivers not having a basic knowledge of the city.

There has been no suggestion so far of Uber moving to Elgin, although last year the Press and Journal revealed the firm was taking bookings for the area through its app.

It’s a potential competitor John is aware his customers will be familiar with though, and one he is preparing to compete against.

He said: “This generation now want to do everything on their phone, I know I’m like that myself.

“If I can get away with not calling up someone and speaking to them because I can do it on my phone then I’ll do it.

“So that has been something we have been looking into.

“It’s just tricky for us because we’re not manned from the office 24 hours a day, so you need to work out how to integrate the bookings from the office with the phones in the car.

“It’s something we’re working on and hopefully we’re going to get a step forward with it this year.

“We speak closely with the people behind the SafeKab app in Inverness, but it always comes back to how you integrate them.”

Why weekends are no longer peak times for C&R Taxis

In days gone by the peak times for taxi drivers would have been late night runs after Friday and Saturday nights on the town.

Both the nighttime and daytime economies have changed in recent decades though.

It means C&R Taxis now find themselves working at peak capacity right through the week to serve a variety of Elgin needs.

John said: “We’ll book 300 to 400 runs a day between 9am to 5pm in the office, outside of those hours the drivers will probably do about the same again.

https://wpcluster.dctdigital.com/wp-con ... 40x564.jpg

“Then there’s hospital contracts, school contracts, college contracts on top of that too.

“We’re 24 hours, seven days a week. If the phone rings at night we’re up, out and away.

“For example, a quick run to Aberdeen yesterday turned into a drive to Edinburgh.

“Taxis are seven days a week now. I remember when I started you lived to work at the weekend, Fridays and Saturdays was when you made your money.

“I know I’ve got drivers now who will turn round and say they made more on a Wednesday night than the weekend. It’s changed.

“People use us for anything. It’s house to house, people don’t want to walk now. It’s a run to the shop and back again, stuff like that.”

This is the Uber piece referred to from last year - very similar to another DC Thomson article, as I recall it, but that was in the Courier (another DC Thomson title) and certainly not in the same area.

But, again, this seem one huge rigmarole to simply say that Uber aren't operating in the local area :-s

But I'm not quite sure how all this works - presumably you can get a quote for any trip from the Uber app, even if there are no cars showing in the area, or wot? #-o

This is from October last year, and I'd guess the chances of an Uber car showing on the app in Elgin would be pretty unlikely - unless it's a car on a run from Glasgow or Edinburgh, which are both the thick end of 200 miles away :-o

And they wouldn't be able to do the run anyway, because of the cross-border rules in Scotland. Unless they booked a car from Edinburgh to come up to Elgin to take them back there, or whatever. I think. But certainly not the local runs they got quotes for here.

Uber taking bookings in Inverness and Elgin: Is firm considering a move?

https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/ne ... inverness/

The arrival of the app-based private hire operator in Aberdeen has proved controversial.

Uber has begun taking bookings in Inverness and Elgin despite not having a licence or announcing its arrival, it has emerged.

The San Francisco-based organisation’s protracted roll-out in Aberdeen has been delayed following a court case.

Now, despite the issues there, it has emerged the operator’s app is already accepting bookings for Ubers in both Inverness and Elgin.

The Press and Journal booked a trip and investigated what is happening with the app-based private hire firm in the Moray and Highland capitals.

How much would Uber cost in Inverness and Elgin?

Uber says it can provide a cheaper alternative to taxis, but critics say the firm takes advantage of surge pricing that can vastly inflate the cost at busy times.

The Press and Journal got a quote from Uber for three journeys from Elgin and three from Inverness.

https://wpcluster.dctdigital.com/wp-con ... 40x564.jpg

For Elgin, we set the Dandy Lion as the beginning of our journeys and were quoted the following prices for trips for up to four passengers on a midweek afternoon:

Tolbooth on Forres High Street – £19.93
Strathisla Distillery in Keith – £26.90
    Lossiemouth’s East Beach – £10.94

In comparison, a Moray taxi operator is quoting the following prices from Elgin:

    Forres – £34
    Keith – £45
    Lossiemouth – £17

For Inverness, we booked out trips from the railway station in the city centre and got the following quotes from Uber for a midweek afternoon.

    Inverness Airport – £15.97
    Drumnadrochit – £24.92
    Raigmore hospital – £5.93

In comparison, a Highland taxi operator is quoting the following prices:

    Raigmore – £9.20
    Inverness Airport – £27.40
    Drumnadrochit – £41

What happened when we booked Uber in Elgin?

I decided to book an Uber in Elgin to see what actually happened.

Would my booking be rejected? Would a driver turn up to pick me up?

For this journey I decided to take a trip that a tourist may take in Elgin, so I booked it from the cathedral to Glen Moray distillery.

We were quoted £4.68 for the trip and were told the driver would be with me in about 10 minutes.

I confirmed I would be waiting at the visitor’s entrance to the cathedral.

With my debit card details already saved in the app I got a message saying “confirming your Uber trip”.

A few seconds later the screen changed to say “ride requested, locating your driver”.

At about this time I got a notification from my online banking app telling me that a pending charge of £4.68 from Uber had been added to my account.

And then… nothing.

Image

The app scrolled through several screens telling me it was “finalising driver details”, telling me the ride had been requested and thanking me for my patience waiting.

After about eight minutes of waiting outside the cathedral I got the message: “Sorry, there are no drivers available. Please try again in a moment or request a different trip.”

The pending charge from Uber on my bank account then disappeared so I wasn’t left out of pocket.

It looks like, for now at least, passengers will have to stick to other options like the local “Uber-style” m.connect bus.

Uber accepting Elgin and Inverness bookings – but not Aberdeen

The experience of trying to book an Uber in Elgin and Inverness is vastly different from Aberdeen, where the firm has already been granted a licence to operate.

If you attempt to book a ride in the Granite City at the moment you are immediately met with a message reading “no rides nearby”.

No prices for trips are quoted, it’s not possible to confirm a booking and you cannot get anywhere near the point where a charge is added to your bank card.

What are the rules surrounding Uber operating?

Uber operates as a private hire company with bookings taken via its online app.

It is not a taxi firm, meaning its private hire drivers cannot pick up at ranks or from people hailing in the street. They are restricted to pre-booked trips on the app.

However, it needs a licence from local councils to operate legally.

Aberdeen City Council has already granted Uber a licence with its arrival initially expected in August.

However, that has been delayed following a court challenge from Unite Union.

Drivers can receive fixed penalties of up to £1,000 for taking fares without a licence, which is legally known as “plying for hire”.

In extreme cases drivers can be taken to court where fines can increase to £2,500 with driving bans and penalty points also a possibility.

Highland Council told the Press and Journal it has not received an application from Uber to operate in the region.

Moray Council’s licensing website shows no record of any application from Uber.

What is Uber saying?

The Press and Journal contacted Uber to ask the Californian tech giant the following questions.

    • Does Uber already operate with drivers in Elgin and Inverness?
    • Is Uber considering operating in Moray and the Highlands?
    • Is Uber offering bookings in Inverness and Elgin to test demand?
    • Is there a software glitch allowing bookings to be taken in Inverness and Elgin?

Despite repeated requests for Uber to comment, the firm did not respond.

I'd guess that's the correct answer - computer says Yes, when it should say No

And I'd guess there's also a 'software glitch' with the author's understanding of plying for hire as well :D

I'm surprised they give a price if there are no cars available; it's not what they usually do in areas they don't cover.

I'm wondering if the likes of what's happening in Dundee with the booking stuff is so they can give their usual spiel about people trying to book an Uber via the app, but can't :-o

That's essentially the boilerplate they use when their might be any difficulties in applying for licences in England...

Thus with the added cross-border difficulties in Scotland, the knowledge test in Aberdeen specifically and now the PH cap in Dundee, maybe they'll use the information in future in a bid to break the dam? :?

They leave the app active and use the attempted bookings e.g. over 100,000 as proof of unmet demand to the council to get the knowledge test cancelled.

They've altered the app to show about 3 fake cars around about you when you open the app to encourage you to book.
When they first opened you could only see the car that they had working for them.
