Two women have been arrested in connection with an attempted murder after an axe was used in a series of late-night attacks on Inverness taxi drivers.
Drivers for three different city firms – Capital Taxis, Inverness Taxis and City Taxis – were caught up in the violent spree late on Tuesday evening and in the early hours of Wednesday.
It is understood a knife was also used, with drivers lured to several specific pick-up points before being threatened.
Exact details remain unclear, but the women are believed to have made off with sums of cash.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Two women – aged 23 and 39 – have been arrested in connection with an attempted murder and three reports of robbery in Inverness, which took place overnight between Tuesday, 24 June, and Wednesday, 25 June, 2025.
“Officers are continuing to follow positive lines of enquiry.”
The spokesman said Police Scotland could give no further detail at this time.
It is understood that at least one person was taken to hospital for treatment, but a spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said they were unable to confirm details without a precise location for the alleged offence.
The drivers’ vehicles have been taken by police for forensic examination.
The two women allegedly involved in the latest incidents are said to have been ‘known’ to the local taxi trade and barred by all three firms.
But systems designed to protect drivers from known offenders are vulnerable to false names and changes in phone numbers.
Back in December 2023, we highlighted concern over increasing violence and abuse aimed at taxi drivers in the city.
Gavin Johnston, owner of Inverness Taxis, was still to learn full details of the “disturbing” attack but confirmed his firm had been targeted.
Mr Johnston said: “It is disturbing, disappointing, but it is a reality and the kind of thing that we have to increasingly deal with unfortunately.
“We do try to bar people on a regular basis who give us trouble like this, but people use false names and get new SIM cards for their phones.
“If they do that, they come back on board as a new customer so we don’t know who it is.
“It is very hard to keep on top of that, which affects security for the drivers.
“Unfortunately, it can affect drivers in a negative way. Some are fearful about working nights or picking up in certain areas.
“It has a negative effect and is not good all-round.
“The fact an axe and a knife appear to have been used is very alarming, but knives are a major thing these days.
“It is not uncommon for our drivers to be seeing knives.”
