Norwich City Council consulted on changes to regulation for taxis and private hire vehicles following the introduction of new laws to improve passenger safety. Councillors have agreed to tighten rules, including more regular background checks and safeguarding training for drivers. But while 58% of 230 people responding to a survey supported mandatory cameras in cabs, a regulatory committee meeting, external agreed they should be optional instead. A report warned cabbies would face costs of up to £1,000 each for cameras, while the council would face extra costs for administering a scheme. The committee unanimously agreed that CCTV should be optional, with drivers responsible for complying with laws including data protection. The authority's Labour-run cabinet will have final say on the changes.

Nothing not to like? Where to start with all that? Maybe better not... But are the magic-money-tree-Greens going to shell out the £1k or near enough per car for the systems? And, as per the false allegations thing, if drivers are concerned about that then nothing stopping them installing their own security precautions. Anyway, can't be bothered going into the real nitty gritty of all this. But the stuff above is presumably entirely coincidental, and absolutely nothing directly to do with the Casey audit and the head of steam building up (on social media at least) over compulsory CCTV.
