Uber driver injured woman when foot slipped https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/ne ... ton-heath/ A CARELESS Uber driver who caused a woman’s broken leg through his inattentive driving has been spared an immediate jail sentence. Hasan Zia has been sentenced after his careless driving caused a passenger to sustain serious injuries in Stockton Heath. The 25-year-old appeared before Chester Crown Court on Friday, having earlier pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving. The court heard how the charge arose out of an incident that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, March 6. Last year. At around 12.20am, the victim ordered an Uber to take her home after finishing her shift at a bar on Grappenhall Road. Zia arrived in a white Toyota Prius and confirmed the fare with the customer as she started to get into the car. However, before she was able to fully enter the vehicle, Zia started driving off, and she fell to the ground. The victim, who was 23 years of age at the time of the incident, sustained serious injuries to her leg that required emergency surgery. The injuries sustained included two fractures to her left fibula, the court heard. Zia was subsequently charged with and denied causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but he later admitted an alternative charge of causing serious injury by careless driving. Appearing in court on Friday, Zia, of Wellington Road South in Stockport, was sentenced to four months in prison, but this was suspended for the next 18 months. During this period, he must complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and undertake 150 hours of unpaid community work. He was also disqualified from driving for the next 12 months. Following his sentencing, PC Stephen Crawford, of Cheshire Police, said: “When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you are in control of a powerful machine. “Such machines are easily capable of causing serious injury, or even death. “Despite working as an Uber driver, Zia failed to abide by the rules of the road or consider the safety of others. “Ultimately, he caused a serious collision which left a young woman with significant injuries. “I hope this case can serve as a reminder of the long-lasting impact of careless driving, deterring others from the same fate.” |
