Taxi driver ambushed and attacked by gang

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/li ... g-31985904

A taxi driver who was waiting for a job was ambushed and attacked by a gang. Merseyside Police were called Stainton Close in St Helens on Sunday, June 29 at around 5.10pm to reports of a robbery.

The victim, a private hire taxi driver in his 40s, was sitting in his black Citroen dispatch taxi waiting for a fare, when he was approached by a young white man on a black and grey electric bike. The suspect, dressed in a grey tracksuit and a black cap, rode directly in front of the taxi and started to mess with one of his tyres.

Shortly after this three further suspects, all white men, came out of a block of flats near the taxi. One was over 6ft tall in his 30s, of large build, with long brown hair and wearing grey shorts and an olive-coloured T-shirt. Another was in his mid-30s to 40s with grey hair.

The suspects approached the taxi shouting aggressively before attempting to grab the car keys. During the assault they demanded and took money from the victim.

Detective Inspector, Jimmy Rotherham said: “This incident left the victim in shock with facial injuries and with considerable expense as the suspects stole cash and keys, leaving the car undrivable. People working in our communities providing vital services should be able to work without fear of being subjected to an ordeal like this.

"Enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible for this robbery. This includes examination of CCTV footage and forensic enquiries, and we would be keen to hear from anyone who might have dashcam footage or CCTV in that area. We also appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident itself or who saw the offenders acting suspiciously to get in touch.”

Anyone with information on this incident can contact Merseyside Police social media desk via X @MerPolCC or on Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’. You can also report information via their website here or call 101 quoting incident reference 25000533871.

Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or via their website here. In an emergency always call 999.
