A taxi driver is fighting for his life in hospital after a serious early hours crash on a major Birmingham road.

The cabbie sustained life-threatening injuries as his Peugeot taxi was involved in a collision with a Volkswagen Golf on Icknield Street, Soho today, Saturday, August 2.

The VW Golf driver, also a man, suffered life-changing injuries in the incident, which took place outside the mosque on Hingeston Street at around 3am.

The street has been cordoned off for several hours, with the road closed still at 1pm. Drivers were warned of 'major disruption' and told to find other routes around the scene where possible this morning.

Police said a third man was also injured in the crash, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. No one has been arrested and officers are appealing for information and witnesses.

"We were called to Icknield Street, at its junction with Hingeston Street, Soho, shortly after 3am this morning (Sat).

"A man, who was driving a Peugeot taxi, was taken to hospital with injuries described as life threatening. A second man, from a Volkswagen Golf, was taken to taken to hospital with injuries described as life-changing.

"Another man, who was also in the Volkswagen Golf, was taken to hospital with injuries which aren’t life threatening. Witnesses or anyone with any information should ring 101 quoting log number 507 of 2 August."
