More framing stuff :-o

This is the official police press release, and certainly doesn't give the impression at the outset that the results aren't particularly good, to put it mildly 8-[

To be fair, most of it is reasonably small beer, despite the longish list of issues. But seven suspended, and one seizure out of 32 inspected certainly isn't good...

And certainly not just roadside checks either.

Cross-border cars mentioned as well, but no sign of Wolverhampton :?

Taxi operation in York

To support the taxi trade’s high standards and passenger safety, an operation to stop and check private hire vehicles was carried out last weekend.

On the evening of Saturday 2 August members of North Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Group deployed in company with Special Constables to check on the safety of taxis in the York area.

Working with partners which include the City of York Council and the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), taxis in the York area were stopped and checked to ensure licensing was in order and vehicle safety was of appropriate standard.

Several taxis were stopped from the North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire areas. Vehicle faults found included defective rear brakes, defective tyres, body work defects as well as issues with vehicle lighting and registration plate offences. One taxi was also seized as it’s tax had expired.

The full findings of the operation were:

    • 32 vehicles inspected
    • 7 vehicles suspended for significant defect
    • 3 vehicles had rectification notices issued for minor defects
    • 10 advisory notices issued for minor breaches in conditions
    • Traffic Offence Report for a defective rear number plate
    • 12 vehicles were satisfactory.

TC Dave Ellison from North Yorkshire Police said: “I’m grateful to the partner agencies who assisted us with this operation.

“Vehicle safety is paramount; people who choose to use and pay for a taxi expect that the vehicle that they are using is safe.

“ We used the opportunity to engage with taxi drivers and where appropriate enforce.”

Councillor Pete Kilbane, Executive Member for Economy at City of York Council, said: “This proactive, multi-agency operation reflects our ongoing commitment to public safety and licensing requirements, on which there cannot be any compromises.

“The agencies carried out inspections on taxis and private hire vehicles licensed in York and elsewhere, to ensure they meet the required standards. The 7 license suspensions and 1 vehicle seizure were all vehicles licensed outside the city. It’s good to see there were no significant issues for York licensed cabs but disappointing to see required standards not being met by all operators.

“New requirements put in place last year raise the emphasis on safety and driving standards even higher to help protect all road users including passengers, so operators need to ensure they’re aware and comply with them”.

The operation also saw the deployment of Special Constables. To find out more about becoming a Special Constable in North Yorkshire please visit the North Yorkshire Police website.

Note that the councillor has emphasised that none of the suspended cars were City of York-plated, so won't be impressed by this press rehash :-o

And doesn't just look like the headline either - you have to read all the way down to the quote from the councillor to realise that the suspensions don't involve local cars - but the framing from the off suggests otherwise, and I suspect many readers will give up by the time they get to the quotes, which are often just of the 'safety is paramount' variety (as is literally the case here).

York taxis suspended during North Yorkshire Police safety checks

Seven taxis were suspended during a North Yorkshire Police operation to check the safety and compliance of taxi services in York.

The operation, carried out over the weekend, was designed to support the high standards of the taxi trade and to protect passenger safety.

On Saturday 2 August, members of North Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Group were deployed alongside Special Constables to check on the safety of taxis in the area.

Working with partners including the City of York Council and the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), taxis in the York area were stopped and checked to ensure licensing was in order, and vehicle safety was of an appropriate standard.

Several vehicles from both North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire were also checked.

Defects identified included faulty rear brakes, worn tyres, bodywork damage, lighting issues, and number plate offences. One vehicle was seized due to expired tax.

The full findings of the operation were:

    • 32 vehicles inspected
    • 7 vehicles suspended due to significant defects
    • 3 vehicles had rectification notices issued for minor defects
    • 10 advisory notices issued for minor breaches of licensing conditions
    • 1 Traffic Offence Report issued for a defective rear number plate
    • 12 vehicles were found to be satisfactory.

TC Dave Ellison from North Yorkshire Police said:

“I’m grateful to the partner agencies who assisted us with this operation.

“Vehicle safety is paramount; people who choose to use and pay for a taxi expect that the vehicle that they are using is safe.

Councillor Pete Kilbane, Executive Member for Economy at City of York Council, said:

“It’s good to see there were no significant issues for York licensed cabs but disappointing to see required standards not being met by all operators.

“New requirements put in place last year raise the emphasis on safety and driving standards even higher to help protect all road users including passengers, so operators need to ensure they’re aware and comply with them”.

Note the subtle difference with the York Press rehash below - unlike the York Mix version above, the headline and strapline don't literally claim that they're York cars.

And they also quote the councillor saying they're not local cars earlier and more prominently in the article :-o

(Just really posting this to bump the thread to the top again, because I note that Sussex has commented on every other recent piece apart from this one, so my latest post had ended up quite far down the page  )

Seven taxis suspended in York police safety crackdown

https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/253769 ... crackdown/

Seven taxis have been suspended after a safety crackdown on vehicles operating in the York area.

Thirty-two vehicles were inspected last Saturday (August 2) as part of the North Yorkshire Police, City of York Council and Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) operation.

Several taxis were stopped from the North and West Yorkshire areas on the night.

The council’s deputy leader said the seven license suspensions and one vehicle seizure were all taxis licensed outside York.

North Yorkshire Police said vehicle faults found included defective rear brakes, defective tyres, body work defects, and issues with vehicle lighting and registration plate offences. One taxi was also seized as its tax had expired.

Three taxis had rectification notices issued for minor defects and 10 received advisory notices for minor breaches in conditions.

Twelve of the vehicles were deemed to be satisfactory, police said.

Dave Ellison, from North Yorkshire Police, said vehicle safety is “paramount” and “people who choose to use and pay for a taxi expect that the vehicle that they are using is safe”. “We used the opportunity to engage with taxi drivers and where appropriate enforce,” he said.

Cllr Pete Kilbane, the council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, said: “This proactive, multi-agency operation reflects our ongoing commitment to public safety and licensing requirements, on which there cannot be any compromises.

“The agencies carried out inspections on taxis and private hire vehicles licensed in York and elsewhere, to ensure they meet the required standards.”

He added: “It’s good to see there were no significant issues for York licensed cabs but disappointing to see required standards not being met by all operators.

“New requirements put in place last year raise the emphasis on safety and driving standards even higher to help protect all road users including passengers, so operators need to ensure they’re aware and comply with them.”
