Peterborough Uber drivers to strike for two days over low pay and poor working conditions https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/new ... ns-5268821 A large number of Uber drivers in Peterborough are set to strike for two days over concerns about low pay and poor working conditions. Drivers will be logging off from the platform for 48 hours starting from 4am on Friday (August 15). A spokesperson speaking on behalf of Uber drivers in Peterborough said: “We have taken this action due to our ongoing concerns over low pay and poor working conditions, which have been repeatedly ignored. "Additionally, the recent fare prices are unsustainable, making it difficult for drivers to earn a fair income. “Until genuine steps are taken by Uber to address these issues, we intend to continue coordinated actions like this. "As drivers, we are essential to Uber’s operations, and we are no longer willing to be undervalued.” |

Anyone remember what the mileage rate was when uber first came in. The lads in Oxford are loving it, making over £1500 a week and get zero commission charge atm and it’s £1.40 a mile, gone up from £1.30. They must have at least 400 cars if not more |

Uber drivers are currently running around everywhere for peanuts, or more to the point, peanuts less 25-30%. The drivers are doing plenty of jobs and not waiting around for that long between jobs, so maybe the money that's in their pocket at the end of the week isn't too bad, but f*** me, do they have to work for it. |

Quite a good turnout, considering that Peterborough isn't exactly Birmingham or Manchester in terms of size  (See photos at the bottom - and, as per usual with this sort of stuff, they don't seem too, er, diverse...) Mehtab Anwar, 30, a full-time Uber driver and one of the organisers, said drivers would be on strike for 48 hours until Sunday morning. An Uber spokesperson said it was working with a union to "improve the experience of driving with Uber". Demonstrations have previously been held elsewhere, including in Newcastle and Bristol. Junaid Ahmed, 26, a Uber taxi driver who works nights, said the strike was a "necessary step" to try to improve working conditions. "It is not sustainable," he said. "We can't work this way and have to do something. "It is so challenging to get in touch with Uber. We are doing this strike to get our message across to them." 'Running on fumes' Arkash Khan said the Uber drivers in the city felt "undervalued" by the company. "We are driving 10 hours a day but after paying for fuel and insurance and maintenance, we are earning less than the minimum wage", he said. "The drivers are running on fumes and we want Uber to put the prices up." He also criticised Peterborough City Council's licensing team. "Getting an appointment has been challenging, especially when drivers are looking to renew licences," he said. "But today, we are here to send our voices to Uber. We need change, and soon." Labour councillor Mohammed Jamil, deputy leader of Peterborough City Council, said: "The council's policies for vehicles and drivers are approved by our Licensing Committee and reflect the standards the authority wants to see in terms of vehicles and drivers operating in the city. "A lowering of our standards could have negative effects, such as increasing driver and vehicle numbers, leading to capacity outstripping demand." An Uber spokesperson said: "All drivers on Uber are guaranteed at least the National Living Wage, holiday pay and a pension plan, as well as free sickness protection and access to free Open University courses. "This means drivers earn with greater security, helping them to plan for their futures while maintaining the flexibility that is a key part of why they choose to drive with Uber. Quote: Quite a good turnout, considering that Peterborough isn't exactly Birmingham or Manchester in terms of size don't forget that 90 to 95 % of those drivers are from a specific community centred around a large religious building. If the prayer leaders say go and join the strike they do as it is important that they are seen to show unity with their community. And the bulk of them live about 5 minutes drive from the station
