Ah, so this explains the other article - it's part of a series about women's safety in Glasgow.

And this all seems a tad odd, because they're assuming the guilt of the driver just on the say-so of the complainant here - fair enough for the press to cover it, but you'd think they'd be a bit more circumspect since it's a live case, or at least an ongoing investigation.

But there's something not right, because if the booking was recorded then presumably he's bang to rights, at least as regards his identity - unless it was an illegitimate driver in the car rather than the one actually suppose to be undertaking the booking :?

Glasgow women speaks out after private hire sex attack

A survivor who was sexually assaulted by a private hire driver says it is an "insult" there is not a women’s only service in Glasgow.

The victim, who we are not naming, ordered a private hire taxi via an app in Glasgow city centre after spending an evening out with a friend last year.

The Glasgow Times spoke to the survivor as part of our series this week looking at women's safety in the city.

Shortly after entering the vehicle, she quickly sensed the driver had a “creepy aura about him”.She continued: “It was a 10-minute journey but I think I was there for close to an hour.

He then put his hand on her thigh before the assault started.

She told the Glasgow Times: "I got picked up by myself and he sexually assaulted me on my way home and kept me hostage essentially until eventually he took me back.

“I said ‘I’ll do whatever you want just take me back to this address’ and then I managed to run out of the car.”

“It’s a bit of a blur but it felt like forever.”

She reported the attack to the police as soon as possible.

The victim said: “I came home and I didn’t shower. My automatic response was I wanted to but I didn’t.

“I went to the police station as soon as I could and they managed to get evidence from the encounter which was weirdly a big relief.

“It’s a bit of a rank thought but it’s a relief because it proved it happened and also if he ever does it again then his DNA’s in the database.”

So far, no one has been linked to the attack. The woman also provided police with a screenshot of the booking.

She added: “The last update I got was the DNA evidence being retrieved but it wasn't a match for anyone on the database.”

Since the attack, the woman has not taken a private hire on her own and says she wouldn't get one on her own with a male driver.

She said: “I wouldn't take a taxi on my own, just with people. I certainly wouldn’t at night that’s for sure."

However, she says she would “absolutely” be comfortable using a woman’s only taxi service and says it is “incredibly insulting” that there is not such a service currently available in Glasgow.

The Glasgow Times reported Govan Law Centre is asking Glasgow City Council to reconsider its position on allowing a women-only firm to be licensed following a recent ruling by the UK Supreme Court.

A previous attempt in 2019 was rejected by the council on the grounds of discrimination.

The woman said: “I think it’s an insult to women for even daring to request safety for women.

“It’s become quite a big part of the day or night is worrying about I’m going to get from A to B so it would be a huge relief.”

She continued: “An empty carriage on a train seems quite eerie but at least there’s CCTV there.

“A taxi is claustrophobic, you’re confined, there’s no CCTV, there’s no one else monitoring the situation, you’re just relying on this person who’s got the wheel who’ll determine your fate essentially.”

The victim used to work in hospitality, something she really enjoyed as she liked being around people.

However, after the attack she left her job and now works for a call centre from home.

She says she has seen an increase in the number of epileptic seizures she’s had due to stress.

She said: “I’ve just worked from home since which has been quite reclusive.

“Having worked in hospitality for 10 plus years and then having to work from home it with the effect of what’s happened, it’s just made me a bit more reclusive.”

She continued: “My nervous system has been shaken up.

“I’m epileptic and I’ve had an increase in seizures since it.

“My anxiety levels have spiked and impacted my epilepsy as a result.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Enquiries are ongoing into the serious sexual assault of a woman that occurred within a vehicle in the Glasgow area on Wednesday, June 26, 2024."

And, as per usual, the problem is...

I mean, even assuming it was allowed, only a very small number of women are ever going to be able to take advantage of it.

The stuff above reads like it's all the council's fault for not allowing the original application, but even if it had, what's the chances it would have prevented stuff like this?

Effectively zero, I'd guess - even if it had been allowed, chances are it would have folded by now, or it would still be unavailable to the vast majority of women because of a huge demand/supply mismatch.

That makes no sense, unless the lady got into a non-licensed vehicle by mistake.
