New taxi plates are being rolled out to boost passenger safety and confidence

We are introducing new plates and signage for all licensed taxis to make them easier for passengers to identify and to provide clear ways to give feedback on journeys.

From now on, private hire vehicles and hackney carriages licensed by the council will display distinctive plates and signs on the rear, front and sides of the vehicle. Hackney carriage fares set by the council will be clearly visible in the inside rear window, and all vehicles will feature information on how to contact the council, including email, phone and a QR code, to share feedback or report concerns.

Drivers are also being issued with new identification badges that must be worn at all times. Both the plates and badges feature built-in security measures to prevent counterfeiting.

The new system will be rolled out across all 114 licensed vehicles and 131 drivers in the district as they renew their licences, with full implementation by 1 April 2026.

Councillor Brian Yeates, Chair of Lichfield District Council’s Regulatory & Licensing Committee, said:

“Our taxi drivers provide a vital service – from getting people home safely after a night out, to taking them to work, to helping people with disabilities get around.

“It’s important for the public to know whether a taxi is a Lichfield District Council-licensed hackney carriage, as these are the only vehicles that can be hailed or pick people up from a rank within the district. All other vehicles must be pre-booked.

“All of our licensed drivers undergo a DBS check every six months, complete medical examinations and safeguarding training every three years, and our vehicles face rigorous testing at least annually – alongside spot checks by our licensing officers.

“These changes are about making it easier for passengers to recognise licensed taxis, feel confident in their journey, and know how to get in touch with us if needed – while also supporting our local taxi trade.”

The council is encouraging residents and visitors to look for the new plates and badges as a quick way to confirm they are using a licensed and vetted driver.

...although it's maybe worse than it sounds. I mean, where is all this stuff in the actual vehicle, and how prominent is it? What, precisely, is the 'HC fares set by the council will be clearly visible in the inside rear window' all about? Is that just a fare card in the rear window? Might work with a big vehicle, but a saloon? :?

Unfortunately this is the only photo supplied by the council, as above, but his is a high-res version. And all it shows is pretty bog standard plates and badges. And a councillor who looks a tad, er, crazy :-o 8-[
