A DRUNK has been sentenced by the courts after admitting to racially abusing a taxi driver doing his job.

Thomas Llewellyn also assaulted and injured a good Samaritan who stepped in to help the situation.

The 38-year-old, of Warrington, was later charged with two counts of assault by beating and one of racially aggravated common assault.

Having admitted each of the offences, he appeared recently before Preston Magistrates’ Court to face sentence.

The court heard that all of the offences were committed in Burnley on January 8 this year.

Llewellyn racially abused a taxi driver and a public servant, assaulting two men and a woman in total during the course of events.

Magistrates highlighted that the offences were so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified.

It was said that he launched an unprovoked attack of a serious nature, resulting in an accumulation of offences.

These caused injury to a member of the public who was trying to assist in calming the situation.

However, taking his guilty pleas into account, magistrates deemed that the custodial sentence could be suspended.

The court heard that the defendant is assessed by the Probation Service as having a prospect of rehabilitation, and that he has taken steps to address his drink issue.

Llewellyn, of Fitzwalter Road in Woolston, was sentenced to three months in prison, but this was suspended for the next 12 months.

During this time, he must complete 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days and pay compensation of £600 to the victims, court costs of £85, and a victim surcharge of £154.
