A man who struck police officers with his car door after mounting a kerb has lost his bid to work as a private hire driver. Police Scotland told Glasgow’s licensing chiefs that Twana Abdulkader Jalal became “aggressive” after officers witnessed him “drive up a public footpath”. The force objected to his application for a private hire licence, which was then rejected by councillors. Cllr Sean Ferguson, SNP, who was chairing the licensing committee yesterday, said: “It’s quite an unflattering narrative that’s been put on show here.” Councillors heard how Mr Jalal had mounted a kerb on Paisley Road West in February 2023. Police officers told him “leaving his vehicle would be a danger to the public”. “The applicant immediately became aggressive, began shouting at police and filming their actions on his mobile phone,” an officer told the committee yesterday. “He attempted to leave his vehicle and swung his car door, striking both officers”, he said, adding the driver had grabbed an officer’s wrist to “prevent arrest.” The applicant disputed the police’s version of events and claimed officers had started shouting at him. He also said he had been homeless at the time. Mr Jalal was convicted last year and ordered to carry out 90 hours of unpaid work. Cllr Ferguson said he had sympathy for those who have experienced homelessness, but that “doesn’t give you carte blanche to go out and assault two police officers.” He added: “Why would you drive along the footpath? You’ve endangered members of the public, you’ve also endangered yourself.” |
