Well this looks quite detailed, and lots of numbers But spot the all-important number that's missing And of the numbers that are provided, they're also meaningless in terms of which code the cars were working under York: Taxi safety checks conducted ahead of Dark Nights operation https://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/ne ... operation/ On Saturday (11 October 2025), officers from our Road Safety Team, supported by Special Constables from York, joined forces with the DVSA, taxi licensing officers from York, Bradford, and Leeds to carry out targeted checks on taxis travelling to and from York. This proactive initiative was part of preparations for the upcoming Dark Nights operation, which focuses on improving road safety for vulnerable users during the darker months. A total of 24 taxis were checked during the evening: • 18 from Bradford • 4 from Leeds • 2 from York (including 1 Hackney carriage) • All others were private hire vehicles Results of the checks: • 10 vehicles were found to be satisfactory • 7 vehicles received advice following minor issues • 7 vehicles were suspended from operating for the remainder of the evening • 4 vehicles received immediate prohibitions from the DVSA • 5 vehicles received a delayed prohibition from the DVSA • 23 tickets were issued (including to private vehicles) by North Yorkshire Police for issues including: o Use of fog lights o Faulty number plate lights o Incorrect number plates o Tyre defects o Using a vehicle in a dangerous condition o Using an incorrectly registered vehicle Traffic Constable Matthew Harvey, Road Safety Officer, said: “This operation is not a one-off. Officers will continue to ensure that vehicles travelling in North Yorkshire are roadworthy, especially taxis. Public safety is our priority, and we’re committed to making sure that those who rely on taxis can do so with confidence.” The Road Safety Team urges all drivers—especially those operating passenger vehicles—to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and compliant with legal standards, particularly as the darker evenings and challenging weather conditions approach. |

But it's not clear if the cars fell into more than one of the above categories, so who knows? And, again, the last bullet point includes the mysterious reference to PH, kind of implying that the rest were HCs, but I doubt that's the case - that would seem to imply no PHV was dealt with by the councils or DVSA, which seems unlikely

Quote: so Stuart how many of the Hackneys checked were wolves plated hackneys working PH ? Absolutely no idea from the evidence in the press release. But black cabs on a Wolverhampton HC plate working in York? My best guess would be a big fat ZERO. Approximately

Is it me, or do I find the numbers tested during these checks to be very limited, or maybe the time allocated to these checks is limited? For example, they could test 50 hackneys by merely showing up at the ranks. I get they wouldn't want to delay punters by doing the cabs at the front, but why not start at the back? As for PH, if the licensing officer doesn't know where they sit and wait, then they need a new licensing officer. |
