Taxi drivers speak out after 'mindless' vehicle vandalism

https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/255723 ... vandalism/

Taxi drivers have been targeted by "mindless" vandals in a series of break-ins across the city.

Windows and front windscreens of more than 30 taxi vehicles were smashed in what has been described as "ongoing and escalating vandalism" by a representative for taxi drivers in the city.

The vandalism happened outside the homes of the drivers in St Mary's, Northam and Bitterne over a four day period.

The incidents - which occurred late at night between Sunday, October 19, to Wednesday, October 22 - have been branded a "hate crime" by one man.

Anwar Sumra, trade representative of the Southampton Hackney Organisation (SHO), believes the vandalism is meant to sow intimidation in the community.

He said: "The pattern and frequency of the attacks indicate organised activity designed to create fear within the taxi and wider local community.

"This is happening three nights in a row. They only target taxis.

"If a person wanted to steal, they would break the windows and take what they wanted.

"It is a hate crime."

Mr Sumra says that the attacks are causing distress and financial strain for drivers, many of whom "serve Southampton’s residents day and night."

Ian Hall, chairman of Southampton Hackney and Private Hire Association, added: "It is mindless damage which costs a lot of money, time off the road, and higher insurance costs.

"It has got to be stopped. They have got to find the culprits and put a stop to it and find out the reasons why."

GMB, the union for taxi and private hire drivers in Southampton, has welcomed Southampton City Council’s temporary measure to support licensed drivers whose vehicles have been damaged or broken into.

The union has also brokered an agreement with the council over livery and signage.

In response to these incidents, the council is allowing drivers to use magnetic panels to cover their livery and remove roof signs when the vehicles are not in use.

Ali Haydor, GMB National Taxi and Private Hire Representative, said: “We hope those responsible for these break-ins are caught soon so normal regulations can return, as they are in place for a reason.”

Police have confirmed they have arrested a man in Eastleigh after reports of thefts from vehicles in Southampton.

The 28-year-old was arrested on Wednesday, October 22, on suspicion of nine vehicle thefts, one attempted vehicle theft, and one non-dwelling burglary.

The incidents were reported on Kent Street, Cobden Avenue, Graham Road, Northam Road, St Mary’s Place and Bitterne Road between Sunday, July 27 and Wednesday, October 22.

He has since been released on conditional police bail pending further enquiries.

The incidents he's been arrested for suggest it's about more than mindless vandalism. That said, if the 30 incidents took place over a few day recently, and the arrest only relates to nine or ten incidents from 27 July, then that only represents the tip of an iceberg :-o

But if it's all down to him then he's certainly been a busy boy

These are bloody horrible annoying crimes, but they are not hate crimes.

The scroat responsible is, IMO, a smack head who got lucky the first time around and has since spent hours/days trying to get lucky again.

The lesson for all of us is don't leave anything of value in your cab.

Not convinced this will actually do much, but it gives the GMB a nice soundbite.
