Leigh petition launched over taxis 'abandoned' for 'months'https://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/255816 ... ed-months/
Image: Daily Echo“ABANDONED” taxis left dumped on two Leigh residential streets for “weeks” on end have left frustrated residents pleading for council action.A petition has been launched by residents of Marguerite Drive and Cliffsea Grove calling for Southend Council to introduce a resident only parking permit scheme.
One resident has claimed a taxi was parked in front of his home for “six weeks”.
Southend Council has said it is aware of the petition and monitoring parking in the area, encouraging residents to report issues to their ward councillor.
Resident James Mead said: “It has been going on around ten months, one of them was parked directly in front of my house for six weeks.
“We have raised it with the taxi firm who have been very polite but nothing seems to have been done.
“We have complained to the council and they said this petition would be the best way forward but as far as they are concerned what they are doing is legal.”
So far, 19 residents have added their signatures to the petition since it launched earlier this month.
James’ neighbour Eleanor Kyles said: “I would definitely back parking permits but not everyone in the area is in agreement.
“You accept that part of living in Leigh is parking is at a premium, having permits for residents and charging for visitor parking would seem like a fair compromise to me.
“People coming to Leigh to go shopping and visit the restaurants makes sense, but leaving a car abandoned for months on end isn’t reasonable.”
The taxi firm whose livery is on the vehicles which can still be seen on the road declined to comment on why the vehicles had been left in the area.
Daniel Cowan, Labour leader of Southend Council, said: “We are aware of a petition concerning parking on Marguerite Drive, Pall Mall and the surrounding roads.
“The petition process is ongoing, and the Council will consider it formally once it has been submitted in line with the usual procedures.
“In the meantime, officers continue to monitor parking issues in the area and any reported concerns will be reviewed as part of that process. Residents who would like a parking scheme introduced can speak to their ward councillors to start the formal process.”
