Post subject:  Clydebank driver's retrograde amnesia after attack by crazy

No shortage of detail here.

And photo is apparently a still from 'dashcam' footage. Presumably not a standard dashcam. Elsewhere CCTV is mentioned, so maybe that's the more appropriate term. Again, though, not a typical angle, although maybe the driver turned the lens round to capture it, or he has some kind of multi-lens system :?

A taxi driver was left with retrograde amnesia from a sustained assault by a passenger.

The attacker returned again and again to punch the driver to the face while shouting threats that the driver's days were "marked".

Stefan Tait previously pleaded guilty to the attack that took place earlier this year in Clydebank.

Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard that the taxi driver was called to a property in the town's Hood Street to collect a passenger.

The 31-year-old arrived around 6.20pm on March 28. About five minutes later, Tait approached and spoke to the driver through his window.

The taxi driver turned his vehicle and returned and stopped again. Tait again approached and opened the front passenger door, offering about £20.

He then got into the front passenger seat with a large speaker.

They drove a short distance before the driver moved the speaker and Tait moved to the back.

The court heard that throughout this, he was behaving in an "animated, erratic and aggressive manner".

He was leaning forward from the rear so far he was within the front.

Tait put his hands on the driver's shoulders and chest while they were driving. He became "further animated".

Then he leaned forward, his body passing the front seats and leaned toward the dashboard with his right arm.

Tait put his left arm across the chest of the driver and started to touch his face.

The driver tried to move his hand but this continued and he was left "frustrated, uncomfortable and distressed".

Finally the vehicle stopped in Wellington Place.

Tait was still speaking in an aggressive and animated manner, gesturing with his hands. The driver gave him his money back and Tait got out.

He then opened the driver's door. The driver closed and locked it.

Tait tried to open it another three times before pointing aggressively and pressing his finger against the window.

Then he punched the window multiple times.

The driver opened the door and accelerated at the same time, causing the taxi to collide with a parked vehicle.

Tait opened the door and approaches with closed fist punching the driver to the face.

The driver fell back as he was repeatedly punched with both fists.

He then walked away, only to return and punch the driver another four times.

Again he left and then returned and resumed the attack.

He was shouting throughout and heard saying, "F*** you, I'm going to do you in" and "Your days are marked".

Finally he walked off in the direction of Vancouver Place.

Police caught up with Tait two days later at Braehead Shopping Centre.

He pleaded guilty to assault and robbing the driver of money.

Tait appeared from custody on November 18 for sentencing and dashcam footage of the attack was shown.

Defence solicitor Judith Reid said: "I am asked to put no mitigation forward. There can be none given.

"The taxi driver was simply doing his job. Until [Tait] saw CCTV, he had no memory of how he behaved.

That was the state he was in.

"When he did, he was shocked by his own behaviour."

Ms Reid said her client had been employed until the incident in March. His past criminal record had a "fairly significant gap" until then.

"Over days and weeks he seems to have suddenly go off the rails with drink and drugs," she said.

Ms Reid appealed for Tait to be punished in the community, or to limit any jail sentence because he pleaded guilty early.

Sheriff John McElroy KC said there was no alternative to custody.

"I have a duty to protect the community from people like yourself who take a taxi and then assault the driver who was doing his job," he said.

"I'm told you remember nothing of this and you will be aware that the driver was taken to the QEUH and found to have retrograde amnesia as a result of what you did."

Tait was jailed for two years, backdated to March 31. He will be supervised for a year when he is freed.
