Well this is interesting in two respects. Out of 150 cars, only two found with issues serious enough to warrant mentioning :-o

Even more strange, the two cars suspended were both Wolves cars, out of 34 of them checked. So of the 116 other cars checked (Preston, South Ribble and Sefton, presumably) nothing found that was worthy of a particular mention, and no suspensions.

Which is odd, because Wolves did their own post on Twitter (the one below is on Preston Police's Facebook page) mentioning the suspensions, and normally Wolves don't post that sort of stuff, and simply give the impression they won't mention faults, unless it's actually no faults found :-o

(Maybe Wolves felt duty bound to mention the two cars because they knew another agency would publicise the operation [-( )

On the other hand, Preston Police don't say that it was specifically Wolves cars that didn't meet the grade, which is very charitable of them :-o )

This weekend, we’ve been working alongside our partners to help keep Preston moving safely this festive season.

On Friday, we joined forces with Preston City Council, South Ribble Borough Council, Sefton Council, and Wolverhampton Council for Operation Parkin – a multi-agency taxi safety operation tackling unlicensed taxis and checking the compliance of those with a license.

Here’s what we did:

    Inspected around 150 licensed vehicles

Dealt with numerous low-level standards and taxi licence compliance issues

Suspended one vehicle as a taxi (who had a passenger on board) and gave a ticket for having illegal tyre tread depth

Engaged with dozens of passengers, providing personal safety advice.

We carry out operations like this regularly because you safety is our priority….not just at Christmas, but all year round.

This is the one posted on Twitter by Wolves Council specifically about their own cars.

Which contains the fact the car ticketed because of the tyre was also suspended, which isn't specifically stated by Preston Police above, and also that the other car suspended was due to an airbag fault :-o

PHVs checked. 2 were suspended, 1 due to airbag fault and 1 for tyre below 1.6mm tread depth.

I see a lot of use of the word cars as opposed to taxi and PHV are you sure this wasn't part of the annual drink drive campaign and it was 34 taxi/phv out of 150 cars ?

Can't see the word 'car' used in the official output, Edders, correct me if I'm wrong [-(

It's a generic term I use a lot to avoid the use of the t-word, particularly when it's not relevant to the post, or it's not really clear whether it's HC or PHV involved, and where it's not really relevant to the content.

And it's a bit easier to type than 'vehicle', and uses fewer characters in the limited space of the thread title :-o

But, as per a lot of this stuff, it depends on the audience. If I say 'Wolverhampton cars' then it should be obvious what I'm referring to in licensing terms, whereas a member of the public might construe those words differently on a newspaper website, say.

So it largely depends on who the intended reader is - police and media are targetting the general public, so use different terminology to what the audience on here will be expecting. If I refer to a 'driver' on here, then that will mean a different thing to a 'driver' in the Express & Star, for example, unless perhaps it's an Express & Star piece about the trade. But, on here, unless specified otherwise, 'driver' obviously refers to something specific, which doesn't need pointing out [-(

Meant to say, too, that even by the standards of these things, the photos are pretty unremarkable...

But this high-res version suggests they were checking the cars in a Shiny Hand Car Wash depot

Which is open seven days, 8am-8pm, except Sundays, when it closes one hour earlier, shock, horror :-o

Hope they had permission to use the depot for the spot-checks; it was presumably closed at the time [-(
