Looks like the driver of the 'civilian' car has died, plus two of his passengers.

And the taxi driver has died, but looks like he had at least three passengers, all of whom survived but are being treated in hospital for injuries.

The official police narrative is that the civilian car collided with the taxi, which sounds a bit like official apportionment of blame, which isn't usually the case at this stage.

But maybe the taxi was stationary at the time, or whatever :-|

(I'd guess that strictly speaking the 'taxi' is PHV, but this is one scenario where the distinction is not at all relevant...)

Four killed and five injured in Wigan Road, Bolton crash

https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/25 ... ton-crash/

Four people have died and five more injured following a horrific early morning crash between two cars on a major road.

The crash happened in Wigan Road, Deane at 12.44am on Sunday (January 11) when a red Seat Leon travelling along the road crashed with a Citroen C4 Picasso, believed to be a taxi.

Police have confirmed the driver of the Seat and two of his passengers have died, along with the driver of the Citroen, while five injured passengers were taken to hospital.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Our Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for information and witnesses for further information following a fatal collision in the early hours of Sunday, January 11.

“At around 12.45am, officers attended Wigan Road, Bolton, where a red Seat Leon was travelling down the road and collided with a Citroen C4 Picasso.

“The driver of the Seat, and two passengers, have tragically died following the collision.

"The driver of the Citroen was also sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Five injured passengers have been taken to hospital, where they are currently being treated.

“A scene is still in place at this time as officers continue their investigation.

“The SCIU are urging for anyone with information to please come forward.

“This includes anyone who saw the vehicle driving before the collision, witnessed the incident itself, or has dashcam/ CCTV footage of the incident.”

The crash happened in a stretch of Wigan Road between Deane Church Lane and Bankfield Street, lined with houses.

One resident living near the crash site reported it happened “exactly at 12.44am as I was texting my partner at the same time when I heard the very loud bang."

They added: "I heard a woman screaming very loudly, straight after the accident and then a few times afterwards.

"She was a pedestrian who saw the accident happen in front of her eyes and started running in the opposite direction of the accident as she saw the bodies being crushed.

"The police had to stop and pull her back because she was close to fainting."

Police were called to the scene, followed by three fire engines and a tactical response unit with paramedics.

Firefighters remained at the scene for around two hours and used cutting equipment to extract casualties from the wreckage, before leaving the incident in the hands of the police.

Another local resident said: "I can’t believe it, I heard the loudest bang and I saw them doing CPR on a person who was in the car accident."

He added: "I saw the taxi driver's passenger, a woman, get out of the taxi, and there were two other people who were in the taxi unconscious."

Cllr Ayyub Patel, of Rumworth, said he is monitoring the situation throughout Sunday and advised members of the community to avoid speculation.

He said: “There are rumours circulating that this was linked to a police chase.

“I’ve spoken directly with officers, and they have confirmed that no police or other authorities were involved.

“This was an unfortunate and very serious incident, with fatalities and a number of injuries.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected, and my thoughts are with all those impacted.

“This remains an active investigation.

“Once the authorities have concluded their work, they will speak directly with the affected families.

“I would ask everyone to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to take its proper course."

Cllr Rabiya Jiva, council cabinet member for stronger communities, which includes policing and public safety, said she and Cllr Patel would work together to support the community at this time.

She said: "Firstly, my thoughts are with those involved and my condolences go out to the families.

"I would urge members of the community to let the police continue with doing their jobs and if they have any further concerns they would like to raise then to please get in touch with their local councillors."

Police officers remained at the scene throughout Sunday morning as the area was cleared of wrecked cars and debris.

Anyone with any information or footage can call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit directly on 0161 856 4741, quoting log 111 of January 11.

Alternatively, members of the public can call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Timing (both in terms of the weekend and early hours) unsurprising for this kind of thing. And I'd guess the people who died will be quite young. Except for the taxi driver.

Anyway, for what it's worth there's a shedload of photos on the Bolton News website - all image credits to the Bolton News/Phil Taylor.

conditions were probably icy causing one of the vehicles to skid maybe

A tragic accident and sympathies to all who have lost loved ones.

from the BBC version

Three teenagers and a man in his 50s have been killed in a head-on collision between a taxi and a car, police have said.

Speed involved by the looks of it

No specific ages disclosed yet, but the stated age ranges eminently predictable.

Sky News wrote:
The Seat driver and two passengers, all believed to be aged between 18 and 19, as well as the driver of the Citroen, thought to be a man in his 50s, died after the collision, which happened at around 12.45am.

All were declared dead at the scene, while five injured passengers were taken to hospital, the force said.

The older man was the taxi driver, GMP Chief Inspector Helen McCormick confirmed in an update at 4pm.

She said formal identification is taking place and the families of those thought to be involved have been informed and are being supported by specialist family liaison officers.

Interesting that they are after footage of the other vehicle before the incident.

One of the councillors asked not to speculate at this time, but if someone went against that, I suspect they would say the drivers in the non-taxi/PH were young and having a good time.

Until they weren't.

This shot in an MEN YouTube video report probably exaggerates the width of the road here, but certainly looks like one of those roads where drivers of a certain, er, demographic might be tempted to really put the foot down at that time of night. (I'd guess it's a 30 zone, but no sign of any signs in the immediate vicinity - if it was a 40 zone I'd guess there would be repeater signs...)

https://youtu.be/hzJSAqCdOno?si=3TjEPbMJVsC7Ffxd&t=16

But that's probably taken from a good distance with a huge telephoto lens, which distorts distances. I'd guess the video above was taken from here below, and the big white building top right at the start of the zoomed video above seems to be the one just visible towards the centre of this below, and this seems to be the pedestrian crossing clearly visible in the video:

https://www.google.com/maps/@53.5695309 ... FQAw%3D%3D

Again, this still image on MEN's website shows is from around the same spot as the Google StreetView, but the lens makes the white building seems a lot closer than it is. On the other hand, the Google StreetView probably make it look further away than in reality...

For what it's worth, two fairly close up photos of the vehicles on the Sky News site:

https://e3.365dm.com/26/01/2048x1152/sk ... 0111164613

https://e3.365dm.com/26/01/2048x1152/sk ... 0111164022

The footage of the road towards the end of this two-minute Sky News report is probably the most realistic portrayal of what kind of road it is. But, of course, things very different in the middle of the night, particularly if weather conditions made the road slippy, or whatever.

The Daily Mail has CCTV footage from a house, which is a bit indistinct.

But these are grabs they've taken, and these are the captions they've used, which speak for themselves. Of course, whether or not that's factually correct remains to be seen:

Image
Footage from CCTV cameras of a nearby property showed the Picasso (left) travelling along Wigan Road shortly before the collision

Image
The point of impact (right) between the two cars appeared to show the Seat travelling on the wrong side of the road. The collision was caught on a local resident's CCTV cameras

I'd bet they're being ultra-careful about getting the IDs spot on after this incredible story about a similar incident in Yorkshire a few weeks ago. Only took them three weeks to work it all out :-|

Found this on Twitter, which says the victims have been 'named locally', which usually means that they haven't been named officially yet.

Looks like the taxi driver lived in Blackburn, about 13 miles away.

Quote:
The crash involved a red Seat Leon carrying three teenagers—two aged 18 and one 19—who all perished, along with the Citroen C4 Picasso taxi driver, a man in his 50s.

Taxi driver Masrob Ali (Ash Street, Blackburn). The 3 friends who also died have been named as - Muhammad Danyaal Ali (Knutshaw Crescent, Bolton), Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar (Junction Road, Bolton) and Farhan Patel (Briercliffe Road, Bolton).

Usual suspects on Twitter claiming it all happened because of immigration, Islam, or whatever

Aye, right - I mean, no white lads have ever been involved in anything like this :-|

For what it's worth, this seems to be the full CCTV video, which only shows half the point of impact, but then shows the Seat careering across the road :-|

https://x.com/i/status/2010346995664171105

So that's probably why Manc Police said the Seat collided with the taxi. Still surprised they phrased it like that at this stage, though.

On the other hand, since presumably there won't be any possibility of criminal charges and prosecution, then police don't have to worry about prejudicing the process, or whatever :?

All the victims have now been named officially (or, at least, the deceased), thus this piece was presumably written prior to that.

Taxi driver killed in horror Bolton crash pictured for first time as family pay tribute to 'gentlest soul'

https://www.lancs.live/news/lancashire- ... r-33212406

Four people died in the collision

The family of a taxi driver from Blackburn killed when in a head-on collision with another car in Bolton have paid tribute to the dad-of-four.

Masrob Ali, 54, was driving his Citroen C4 Picasso on Wigan Road in the early hours of Sunday (January 11) when the collision occured. Three teenagers in the other car, a red Seat Leon, were also killed in the crash and have been named by the Bolton Council of Mosques (BCoM) as Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar, Farhan Patel and Muhammad Danyaal Asghar Ali.

Masrob, who had worked as a taxi driver for around 10 years, set off from his house in Ash Street in Blackburn at teatime on Saturday. The following morning, at around 5.55am, police knocked on the family home to inform them he had tragically been killed.

His oldest child, 29-year-old Humayra, described her dad as "the gentlest soul". Relatives and friends have been supporting the family since they received the devastating news.

"Nobody has a bad word to say against him, he was so kind and the best dad," Humayra said. "When they knocked on our door and told us what had happened I was just so confused.

"Dad was such a safe driver and even when we said we were worried something might happen he would say 'don't worry about me'."

Masrob's family say they were told he was killed instantly in the collision and wouldn't have suffered any pain.

"The police have been wonderful," Humayra added. "They said the mortuary is normally closed at weekends but they arranged for it to be opened so we could go and see dad and say goodbye."

The collision is being investigated by Greater Manchester Police. Officers have already obtained CCTV of the crash which Humayra has also seen.

"It's clear that my dad wasn't at fault and didn't do anything wrong," she added. Any witnesses who haven't already come forward are being urged to contact police on 101.

This from MEN is slightly more human interest-ish, for what it's worth.

"He'll never walk back through the door": Family of dad killed in Bolton crash pay tribute to hard-working man who saved up to build a home for his family

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/hell-never-wa ... 39421.html

Despite having to learn English from scratch, after emigrating to the UK from Bangladesh at the age of 12, Masrob Ali was determined to make a life for himself and a home for his family.

He was an Uber driver, living in Blackurn. I wonder if he was badged there?

Anyway, this sounds about right :-|

This isn't the whole article - the rest is just some of the stuff above repeated.

Had a look for the video on social media, since it's said below that it's been 'shared extensively', but couldn't find it. Or, at least, couldn't find it on Twitter - not keen on venturing onto Facebook or Tiktok, or wherever else people post stuff like this...

Bolton horror crash video showing driver hitting 122mph 'forming part of police investigation'

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk ... g-33212814

Police are understood to be probing the clip as part of their investigations

https://i2-prod.manchestereveningnews.c ... O02JPG.jpg

Video footage showing a driver hitting speeds of more than 120mph while weaving in and out of traffic is forming part of a police investigation into a fatal head on crash in Bolton on Sunday (January 11).

The clip appears to show a car travelling at high-speed down a busy street, with the driver overtaking other cars and veering onto the wrong side of the road. At one point in the clip, the car appears to reach a speed of 122mph.

The M.E.N understands that the video is believed to have been filmed by an occupant of the Seat Leon involved in the fatal crash on Wigan Road. Three teenagers in the Seat died, as well as the driver of a Citroen C4 Picasso taxi.

Today (January 12), the driver of the taxi has been named as 54-year-old Masrob Ali.

A timestamp on the clip, which has been shared extensively on social media, states that it was filmed at 3am, which is understood to be Saturday morning (January 10) - just shy of 24 hours before the fatal crash at 12.50am on Sunday.

Greater Manchester Police are understood to be probing the clip as part of their investigations.
