Uber welcomes decision for public consultation on knowledge test

Uber has welcomed Aberdeen City Council's decision to launch a public consultation on the proposed scrapping of the controversial knowledge test.

The local authority's licencing committee met on Wednesday to discuss the thorny issue, with proposed reforms to the test requirement facing fierce opposition from city taxi chiefs.

The Press and Journal, which covered the meeting in full, reports the public will now be asked their views on taxi policy, including whether pre-booked private hire drivers should have to sit Aberdeen’s disputed street knowledge test.

An Uber spokeswoman told the P&J: “Aberdeen has a long-standing and well-documented shortage of private hire cars.

“We welcome the licensing committee’s decision to consult on the current policies in place for taxis and private hire cars in Aberdeen.

“This is an important step toward improving transport reliability for the city.”

But the Uber view isn't universally shared.

The public might say keep the test. To some, no test means driver 'doesn't have a clue where they're going' (even if that's not actually the case).
