Not much concrete info here, and it's mostly about road users generally, as opposed to the trade specifically.

And it could well be that the hit rate for balding tyres was higher than in my thread title - it may be that the 15 trade cars checked weren't all Leicester-plated - it reads like some could have been cross-border, but the relevant paragraph (at the bottom) could be construed either way.

And can't find original source either, but I'd guess it doesn't use the words 'balding tyres' (sounds more like my head) nor 'tyres under the required thickness' :-s

Anyway, the Mercury has gone to town with this, with a proper photo gallery :-o

Seven in total, and maybe best to view them on the source page rather than on here, because they're too big to display individually.

But, er, don't hold your breath about the photos

Taxis found with balding tyres as dozens of offences uncovered at Leicester traffic stop

Illegally tinted windows were also spotted by police officers

Dozens of offences including taxis with balding tyres have been uncovered at a Leicester traffic stop operation.

The vehicle stop operation took place on Monday this week (January 26) in Belgrave Road, Belgrave and saw officers from Leicestershire Police, the DVLA and officials from Leicester City Council conduct a number of traffic stops.

During the two-and-a-half-hour operation, officers uncovered dozens of offences, including taxis with balding tyres, mobile phone use by drivers and illegally tinted windows.

There were also 12 illegal number plate offences detected by police.

As well as more than 30 offences dealt with by the police officers, DVLA and city taxi inspectors found a dozen issues relating to commercial vehicles, including taxis.

Jonathan Clarkson, spokesperson for the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership, said: “Over 30 traffic offence reports were issued at the Leicestershire Police operation on Belgrave Road, including 10 for mobile phone distraction, six drivers not wearing seatbelts, 12 illegal number plates and four illegally tinted windows.”

Meanwhile, Leicester City Council said that six drivers of commercial vehicles were fined for failing to display "no smoking" signs, and three other drivers were fined for littering.

There were 15 taxis checked in total during the operation, and three of the vehicles licensed by Leicester City Council were found to have tyres under the required thickness.

I think about a third of all taxis/PHVs down here have them.
