When I saw this headline I thought it was related to the incident in the headlines last week. But of course it was a completely different thing. Presumably.

Carlisle man denies bottle attack on city taxi driver

https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/2583 ... xi-driver/

A CARLISLE man has appeared in court accused of a bottle attack on a city taxi driver.

Derek Andrew Simpson, aged 53, of Millholme Avenue, faces one charge.

This alleges that Simpson unlawfully and maliciously caused a man grievous bodily harm during an incident which is said to have occurred at a taxi rank close to Carlisle railway station on August 23, 2024.

Simpson pleaded not guilty to the allegation during a short hearing at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

A prosecutor alleged that the taxi driver had been in the course of his employment when he “sustained a head wound from a bottle”.

He required staples and a tetanus injection in the aftermath, magistrates heard.

Simpson elected — as is his legal right — to have the case heard at Carlisle Crown Court. He is due to appear in front of a judge for a plea and trial preparation hearing on March 9, and in the meantime has been granted bail.

One condition of that bail prohibits him having any contact with the complainant in the case.
