Well if yesterday's piece about Three Rivers was overegged by the Watford Journal's framing, then for a change this does precisely the opposite.

I mean, almost 60% of cars tested failed? :-o

A similar take by the Watford Journal's sub-editor might be:

"Southampton taxi drivers a bigger threat than ISIS"

On the other hand, not much to go on at all in terms of substantive detail, and no sign of the original source for this :?

Southampton taxi drivers stopped for safety checks

https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/259330 ... ty-checks/

A taxi compliance operation has identified safety defects in more than half the vehicles inspected.

The joint inspection, carried out on Monday, March 2, in Southampton by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Roads Policing officers and Southampton City Council’s licensing team.

The force checked a total of 24 vehicles, all of which underwent full compliance and mechanical inspections.

Ten vehicles passed the inspection, while 14 were found to have defects and were instructed to fix all defects before being allowed to return to operation.

Councillor Alex Winning, leader of Southampton City Council, said: "Earlier last week, Southampton City Council’s Licensing staff in partnership with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary assessed taxis and private hire vehicles on Southampton streets, regardless of where they were licensed.

"Since our last operation, the number of inspection failures have dropped which shows these operations are having a positive effect in ensuring our roads are a safe place for all."

...although that makes it sound like very comprehensive inspections, maybe on-ramp. And maybe selecting the dodgier-looking vehicles, which could explain the high fail rate

Well if they did all end up on ramps, I would question that claim :?

So 58% is an improvement? :-o

See other bumped thread, which I'd totally forgotten about...

with the best will in the world cars never remain in perfect condition so if the checks are done to an excessively high standard almost any car can fail for something that's hardly safety critical.

it wouldn't surprise me if 100% of the cars were road legal just 42% with minor faults
