Taxi driver punched and bit girlfriend in early morning row

A man punched his girlfriend in the arm, then pinned her to a sofa and bit her hands during an argument. Taxi driver Ryan Mayled, 27, assaulted his girlfriend at their Bromborough home as she was getting ready for a university class.

The incident occurred at around 8.30am on October 7 last year, when a row broke out between the pair. At Liverpool Magistrates Court today, April 9, prosecutor Jess Jones said: "The defendant (Mayled) stood up to leave and the victim put her arm in his way to block him.

"It is at this point the defendant assaulted the victim. He got in her face, he punched her left arm. The defendant grabbed the wrist of the victim, pinned her to the sofa, and bit both her hands, causing cuts to her hands."

The woman called the police, and Mayled was arrested. Ms Jones said: "There was no use of a weapon, but this is a domestic abuse case and these are aggravating factors, the Crown submit. The harm is more than minor in terms of injury caused to the complainant."

Photographs of bruises left on the woman's arm were shown to the court. In a statement, the victim said: "The ongoing stress and anxiety have had a serious impact on my health. I suffered from panic attacks, nightmares and flashbacks.

"I have been prescribed medication which has significantly affected my ability to function day to day. I'm autistic and the sudden loss of routine combined with the loss of my primary support left me severely deregulated."

She added that the assault had affected her university education, as she required additional support and extended deadlines as a result.

Mayled, who had no previous convictions, initially pleaded not guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, but changed his plea to guilty before trial. He appeared in the dock today for sentence.

Claire Roach, defending, said: "The defendant accepts full responsibility for the matter before the court. On the first occasion when he came to court he entered a not guilty plea, where was no evidence at court.

"This incident stemmed from a family trying to get through their daily lives, and there has been an argument. The defendant has got up to walk away and in doing so has been stopped.

"He believed his reaction at the time was necessary in order to get away from the situation, however once we got that evidence, straight away he said 'I need to enter a guilty plea'."

As a result of this offence he now has convictions on his record. He has lost his home. his mental health has also deteriorated, through his own fault he accepts, but from the date of this incident he has been punished daily because his life has been turned upside down."

Sentencing, the magistrates said: "We take into account the aggravating factors of this case. It was a domestic abuse setting. We also take into account you have no previous criminal convictions.

"We have absolutely no doubt this offence crosses the custody threshold. You are therefore sentenced to 27 weeks in prison. However you're prepared to suspend that prison sentence for a period of 12 months. The reason is because we have rad the report and we believe there's a prospect of rehabilitation, and it states in the report you do not present a high risk of harm."

Mayled, of Marlow Avenue, Chester, was sentenced to 27 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.

So he forgot that he punched and bit her, but now that she has clearly continued with the prosecution, his memory has recovered. [-(

But no mention of his badge, or the badging authority? I suppose it's safe to assume he's no longer a 'taxi' driver.

But I'd guess any member of the public reading the piece would assume he's still a taxi driver, thus this kind of thing doesn't do the trade's image much good in the first place, never mind if the public assume he's still badged when he isn't.
