A rare piece from The Westmorland Gazette :-o

And it's all kicking off there

Seriously, though, I've no doubt this is problematic. But when you consider that anyone could park all night on our main rank in St Andrews and no-one in officialdom would bat an eyelid then it makes you wonder about all the parking tickets being handed out here to delivery drivers etc. Allegedly.

Kendal care home residents call for taxi bay rethink

Residents of a Kendal retirement complex have called for a rethink of taxi bays on Highgate, warning that a lack of dedicated delivery space is putting off couriers and leaving older people without parcels and food orders.

Representatives of Websters Yard, which has more than 70 flats and serves another 100 homes at New Inn Yard, told the South Lakeland Locality Board on April 16 that some delivery firms were now refusing to come on site because of repeated parking tickets.

Mr Woods, chair of the residents’ committee, said taxis rarely used two reserved bays near the entrance, with drivers instead waiting directly outside Websters Yard for less mobile customers.

Backed by local MP Tim Farron and ward councillors Patsy Dixon and Matt Severn, residents are asking for a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to convert part of the taxi area into shared space for delivery vehicles.

Mrs Wilkinson, one of the younger residents, said reliance on home deliveries had grown, but drivers struggled to find a legal stopping place for even a few minutes.

The board heard frustration at what residents described as a lack of response from the Highways Traffic Team, with no reply to a letter sent more than two months ago seeking reassurance that the TRO bid was on this year’s programme.

The last formal communication, members were told, dated back to September and followed Mr Farron’s intervention.

Chair Cllr Sheila Pender said highways officers were aware of the request and that a review of parking arrangements on Highgate had been added to the list of future highway schemes.

Any changes would go out to consultation with all affected users before a decision is made.

She said the council recognised the challenges facing residents and would look for opportunities to progress the work “as soon as circumstances allow”, but stopped short of promising it would be delivered this year.
