The latter case is the less violent one. Maybe because she's the woman

Taxi driver stabbed and robbed over £6 fare in Hamilton

A taxi passenger stabbed the driver and threatened to kill him in a row over a £6 fare.

Robert Mitchell was jailed for 30 months for carrying out the "appalling" attack in Hamilton.

The 36-year-old was sentenced at the town's sheriff court today.

He admitted assaulting the cabbie and robbing him of a three-figure sum in Mill Road on August 5 last year.

Sheriff Colin Dunipace told Mitchell: "This was an appalling attack on a gentleman trying to go about his work.

"Taxi drivers are very vulnerable given the nature of their employment and a significant custodial sentence must be imposed."

Daisy Bentley, prosecuting, said a booking was made in the name of Mitchell shortly after midnight and the taxi driver made his way to Mill Road.

She told the court: "The accused and others got into the taxi with Mitchell taking the front passenger seat.

"The driver said the £6 fare had to be paid up front and Mitchell became irate at this. He asked why and was told it was the firm's procedure.

"At that the accused shouted 'I'm going to kill you' and took a knife of around eight inches in length from his pocket.

"He then punched the driver on the head and body.

"The driver managed to call the taxi office, saying he'd been hit, and the police were contacted.

"Mitchell shouted 'Give me all the money' and removed £100-£150 in mixed notes from a cup in the centre console.

"The driver managed to get out and ran to the rear of his vehicle, but the accused followed and again shouted 'I'm going to kill you'.

"He then struck the driver on the top of his head with the knife before leaving with the others."

Ms Bentley said the driver was taken to hospital where two head wounds were treated.

Mitchell admitted previous convictions for crimes of violence.

Defence lawyer Lucy Dwyer said he accepted his behaviour was "inappropriate", adding: "There had been an altercation involving others about fares not being paid on previous occasions."

The 30-month prison sentence was backdated as Mitchell has been in custody since his arrest in August.

Taylor Grey, 30, of Cadzow Bridge Square, Hamilton, appeared in the dock alongside Mitchell.

She admitted assaulting another taxi driver in Mill Road around 9.30am on August 6.

The court heard she shouted abuse and tried to punch the cabbie after another row over a fare.

Sentence was deferred until next month and Grey, who had been held in custody since her arrest, was allowed bail.
