Another one from Reading - but this was why I was looking on the Council's website. I wondered whether this was one of the individual cases reported separately.

But this looks like a completely separate case - and reads like a civvy car, as opposed to a PHV plying for hire :-o

And that's maybe why the make and model of the car is stated, but nothing else.

Reading man fined for uninsured taxi operating in town

A man has been fined more than £2,000 for using an uninsured vehicle and operating without a taxi licence.

Amit Malik, 38, of Coley Avenue, Reading, appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Monday, May 11, where he plead guilty.

The court heard that he had allowed a Toyota Estima to stand or ply for hire on West Street in Reading on June 28, 2025, without the vehicle being licensed as a public hackney carriage.

He was also found to have used the same vehicle on the road without a valid policy of third-party insurance in place, as required under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Mr Malik was fined £594 for the insurance offence and £225 for the licensing offence.

He was also ordered to pay a victim services surcharge of £328 and costs totalling £1,640, bringing the total penalty to £2,787.

Magistrates imposed seven penalty points on his driving record.

A payment plan was put in place, requiring Mr Malik to pay £80 per month starting from June 8, 2026.

Usual BS about the *fine* as well - and if they just want a headline figure then wouldn't it be more accurate to state that it's nearly £3,000 rather than more than £2,000?

Unusual to read about payment plans in cases like this, though. although I'd case they do happen quite often, but just aren't reported in the press :?

They happen all the time, but I suspect they are only reported if a reporter just happens to be present in court.

It makes it easier if the bench sets a payment level, as that's then a court order, and non-payment can lead to custody.

Courts like large fines/amounts to be paid within a year, unless the defendant is on benefits, then a 'deduction from benefits' order is put in place.

In other words, the good old taxpayer pays it.
