I think this man would benefit from a quick shot of quality control testing. Anyone else charge for carrying luggage? ....................................................... Express and Echo (Exeter) August 23, 2006 Wednesday HEADLINE: Taxi driver makes a case for a tip! My daughter recently visited me from Yorkshire and caught a taxi outside St David's Station. Normally the driver goes across the level crossing as this is the most direct route but he chose to go over Exe Bridges and along Okehampton Road, catching each set of traffic lights. On arriving at my house, she took note of the price on the meter which was £4.75. When asked the fare he said: "£5 would do as I loaded your case". Is it normal to charge for lifting a case in and out of a taxi, above the amount on the meter? This has made me so angry. Do they expect a tip as well? I personally think that if you have a luggage charge then it should clearly be on display, however lets be honestr this is all part of a Taxi drivers routine and should be accepted as such, having said that though, when you do this for a customer a bit of gratuity is greatly appreciated, but in this day and age i can see why some drivers would choose to say stuff em as a lot of customers these days have no respect for us drivers!!!! |

We don't charge for luggage eitherWe can charge 20 per case for luggage that goes outside the passenger compartment......but it must be on the meter and by law it is an offence to charge more than whats on the meter, but I know you know that too? Regards JD |

we charge extras for articles carried outside the passenger compartment, excluding prams & dogs (not guide dogs of course, merely lurchers who may have been lamping  )

We are allowed to charge for luggage if carried in the front, 10p per case, so that would be about 30p max in a fairway. We can't charge for loading it though.

Express and Echo (Exeter) September 2, 2006 Saturday HEADLINE: Amazed by taxi luggage charge I was interested to read the letter Poor taxi service not commonplace, Points of view, August 23. My son, grandson and I returned from Newcastle on Saturday, August 19, then hired a taxi to take us to Heavitree. On leaving the taxi, the driver added £1 on to the fare, much to my son's amazement. He was told by the driver that was for our luggage - two holdalls and one suitcase - fare total £6.70. Needless to say he did not get a tip. I have since discovered, having spoken to a councillor, that if one hires a hackney cab they charge 20p for each piece of luggage they carry but if one hires a private taxi they will not charge for one's luggage. So what's the difference? Maybe someone can answer the question. ................................................................. |

They should stick to trying to fleece their constituant's for every penny, they have NOTHING to do with what Private Hire charge. Btw, we can (but dont) charge 10p per bag outside the passenger compartment. Good job as well, half the asda shoppers i carry would have to pay £2-£3 extra by the ammount of stuff they buy. |

Three adult passengers and three items of luggage outside the passenger compartment would account for the one pound extra charge. However if the two holdalls had been carried inside the passenger compartment then they may not have incurred any charge? Depending on the bylaws? Under normal circumstances extras are supposed to go on the meter and are part of the total fare when totalled at the end of the journey. What you see is what you pay. I accept there are some areas in the UK who do not have meters but I expect any extra charge is referenced in their bylaws. Regards JD |
