Can't see what would raises suspicions here - who doesn't have £148k in their 'taxi' occasionally...

I certainly have, at least after a half-decent shift pre-card readers :-o

Or maybe it was actually £148 without the 'k'

A taxi driver caught with £148,000 of dirty money in his car avoided jail this week.

Irfan Sarwar, 44, initially held the cash at his plush home in Glasgow's Robroyston on November 20 2021.

A police surveillance operation led officers to stopping Sarwar in the city's Maryhill where the money in large bundles was found.

Sarwar claimed that he was working for an Albanian man and paid £200 which he accepted due to his then financial struggles.

Sarwar pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to possessing £148,555 of criminal property.

Sheriff Owen Mullan tagged Sarwar for six months keeping him indoors between 6pm and 6am on top of the unpaid work order.

The court previously heard that National Crime Agency officers had kept tabs on Sarwar.

They noted Sarwar and a child enter his home in Cortmalaw Crescent before he returned to his Toyota private hire taxi alone.

Prosecutor Ryan Watson said: "Officers saw he was carrying a bag for life which appeared to be weighted.

"Sarwar placed the bag inside and drove off."

Officers traced Sarwar to Garscube Road while he was sat in traffic then searched the vehicle.

Mr Watson said: "There was a bag in the footstool which had a large quantity of cash.

"There were three bundles of cash containing £148,555."

Sarwar was arrested and taken into custody.

Mr Watson stated: "Sarwar said two months ago he was parked outside a pub and he was approached by a group of Albanian man.

"One of them named Vino offered him £200 to pick up and drop off the package.

"He said he accepted the offer as he was struggling financially."

The folks whose money it was will not be pleased.

But the police who will be spending it will be.
