HEADLINE: GOLF: ORR'S DOUBLING UP ON DRIVING SKILLS

TAXI driver David Orr clocked up a great first round at the Scottish PGA Championship at Gleneagles yesterday.

The East Renfrewshire ace ripped out a five-under 68 to finish a shot behind early frontrunner Craig Lee.

Orr, a former British Assistants' champ, has taken up a job as a part-time cabbie as he tries to fund his golf career without the backing of a sponsor.

And after burning up the fairways at Gleneagles in the afternoon, Orr then set his sights on racking up the fares in Glasgow city centre at night as he raced off for a shift in his taxi.

He said: "I'm going on a family holiday to Tenerife next Monday. I need all the money I can get so I'll do a few hours in the cab before coming back up to the golf.

"I have a full category for the Challenge Tour but can't afford to play on it and that's quite frustrating. The taxi driving gives me the chance to make some money plus the flexibility to play golf on the Tartan Tour.

"It would probably take me about three months of really hard graft in the taxi to make the first prize here so that's agreat incentive to go out and play well."

Lee carded a sizzling six-under 67 to surge to the top.

The 29-year-old has also been left strapped for cash after setting up his own golf teaching centre in Stirling and said: "I ran up a bit of a debt getting that off the ground so hopefully I can eat into that with a good finish here."

Hearts fan Andrew Oldcorn was left gutted after watching the Jambos crash out of Europe but cheered himself up with a 71. He said: "I'm happy enough with that. With the way I've been playing recently it's about as good as I could have expected."
