A cabbie has been banned from driving and ordered to pay out £2,500 after using an unlicensed vehicle.

Mohammad Karim was sentenced in his absence when he failed to appear in court on Wednesday (July 29).

The 27-year-old was convicted on two charges of driving a Skoda Kodiaq in Sleaford without a taxi licence and two charges of driving without insurance at a trial held in his absence on July 3.

Karim was initially in the clear to use another vehicle as a cab, but decided to use his unlicensed vehicle when this became ‘undriveable’.

Prosecutor Lottie Tyler told Boston magistrates: “The defendant used a Skoda in Sleaford town centre as a taxi without a licence for himself or the vehicle.

“This went against his insurance.”

Karim was found guilty of being the driver of a vehicle that was not licensed as a Hackney carriage but drove, stood or plied for hire on Sleaford’s Southgate on September 15 and on Station Road on October 7 last year.

He was also convicted of not being correctly insured on both these occasions.

Miss Tyler explained the defendant’s taxi licence was revoked by North Kesteven District Council on September 25 after the first incident.

But he again used the vehicle as a taxi less than a fortnight later.

“He admitted to NKDC he hadn’t used the vehicle he was licenced for because it was undriveable and used this vehicle instead to carry out business,” Miss Tyler said.

Karim, of Spire View, Quarrington, Sleaford, contacted the court to tell them he would not be attending sentencing due to suffering from diarrhoea.

However, magistrates opted to continue with the case.

Karim, who already had six points on his driving licence, was handed another six points for driving without insurance - securing a six-month ban from the roads.

He was also fined a total of £1,320 and ordered to pay a £525 victim surcharge and £620 costs.
The £2,468 total must be paid within 28 days.
