| Post subject: | Fife driver renewed despite two speeding offences |
More holier-than-thou stuff So that's three articles in a few hours reeking of self-righteousness from finger-wagging councillors On the sanctimony scale I'd put the over-ranking one first, then the smoking one, then this one Taxi driver caught speeding twice has licence renewed by Fife Council https://www.dunfermlinepress.com/news/2 ... e-council/ A FIFE taxi driver has been allowed to renew his licence despite being caught speeding on two occasions last year. Allun Wright had to appear before Fife Council’s Regulation and Licensing Committee where a bid to renew his taxi driver licence for the next three years was considered. Licensing officer Tom Brown told councillors that the applicant had been granted a one year licence in April last year subject to a warning. He said Mr Wright’s DVLA licence showed speeding offences from May and November last year. Mr Wright confirmed to the committee that he was doing 89mph on the A92 near Lochgelly to gain the first speeding rap. “It is not an excuse. I had just come back from holiday and had picked my dogs up from the kennel and one of them needed the vets and I was not paying attention,” he said. “I was just trying to get the dog to the vet and an unmarked car pulled in behind me. “The second one in November, I was driving an unfamiliar car for a company I was doing work for and I hit the wrong thing and it put cruise control up. I was on the M90 at Kirkliston and it was 80 that the camera caught it at.” Since the offences, Mr Wright said he had completed his CPS and bus licence and doesn’t drive taxis full time as he now drives coaches. He said training he has undertaken covered driving awareness which had seen him further his knowledge and understanding. Cllr Gordon Pryde was concerned about the first offence happening so soon after Mr Wright became a taxi driver. “The first offence was just a few weeks after your driver training course. I am sure on that there were elements of speed awareness,” he said. “Subsequently you have been convicted of speeding and then speeding again. Given that the taxi driver training course didn’t change your behaviour as regard to speeding, why should we believe you have changed on speeding now?” He responded: “There is no excuse. I was trying to rush the dog to the vet. I was not paying attention. I did hold my hands up. I take safety seriously. “I was driving an unfamiliar vehicle. I did notice and was trying to correct it but I was driving an unfamiliar vehicle at the time. It shot up to 80. It was user error. I do not contest that fact.” Cllr Donald Lothian moved that the application be approved. “Mr Wright has been very honest and has presented himself very well and, looking ahead, I am going to move for approval with a warning,” he added. Supporting the decision, Cllr Lea Crowe told Mr Wright: “We do not want to see you again.” |

Quote: Mr Wright confirmed to the committee that he was doing 89mph on the A92 near Lochgelly to gain the first speeding rap. As usual, we're not even told what the speed limits were, and what time of day or night it was, or traffic conditions etc. But that's on a stretch of road of several miles of dual carriageway. You could probably bowl along there at speeds like that and at certain times and be safer than the workaday headbangers you see all over the place every day. And who are just left to get on with it https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lochg ... FQAw%3D%3D |
