Brighton axe taxi firm after driver arrested for drug use

Brighton & Hove Albion have axed one of the taxi companies hired to transport players to and from home games after one of the drivers was spotted appearing to use an illegal substance in his car at the Amex Stadium.
Police arrested the driver, and players were instead driven home in club vehicles and other taxis after last Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win against Italian side Bologna.
The fixture was a test run for players to arrive together via bus for home matches for the coming season — a more relaxed preparation with less time to kill than the normal routine of driving their own cars to and from the stadium.
They were picked up from their homes by the fleet of taxis and driven to the club’s training headquarters in Lancing for a pre-match meal before the 25-minute journey by bus to the Amex.
The taxis were then due to return the players home after the match. But sources with knowledge of the events, who asked to remain anonymous given the sensitive nature of the situation, said one driver was spotted by a CCTV operator in an area which was out of bounds and his movements were tracked.
The sources said footage showed the driver taking a white powder, leading to his arrest by police and the taxi company being immediately stood down by the club, in line with Brighton’s zero tolerance policy on drug use.
The Athletic has contacted Sussex Police for comment but they did not respond by the time of publication.
It is the second time Brighton’s pre-season plans have been disrupted this summer. The Athletic revealed in July that a training camp in Evian, France, had to be cancelled at short notice by the club after helicopter landings transporting U.S. president Donald Trump and other world leaders to the G7 summit in the spa town ruined pitches they intended to use. They had to make alternative arrangements in Austria.
Brighton open their Premier League campaign at home to Aston Villa on Sunday following a 0-0 draw away to Norwegian side Tromso on Thursday in the Conference League play-off round first leg. The second leg is at the Amex Stadium on August 27.
