Defo think this fella would be on the front page of the telephone book. Glasgow Uber driver suspended after lifting passengers without a booking https://www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glas ... r-34632473 An Uber driver who picked up passengers in Glasgow city centre without a booking has been suspended. Alaa-Aldi Abdul Aleem lifted two young people in Union Street and dropped them off at a hotel in nearby Jamaica Street on April 19. He had previously claimed the passengers had told him they had no money for a fare so he undertook the journey for free, a council committee heard. A person who complained about the incident submitted video footage of the pickup, which was viewed in private by councillors during the meeting. It is illegal for private hire drivers to lift passengers on the street without a booking as only black cabs or hackneys are permitted to do so. Speaking at yesterday’s licensing and regulatory committee, a representative of Aleem, said the private hire driver had a “clean record.” He told councillors Aleem had only went to Union Street to get “something to eat” and had made a “genuine mistake,” which he “regrets.” The representative asked the councillors to allow Aleem the opportunity to continue his work. Councillors viewed video footage of the incident and the meeting heard the vehicle travelled to the Leonardo Hotel in Jamaica Street. Accusing the driver of a lie, committee chair Sean Ferguson pointed out Aleem had said he had decided to give a lift for “free.” There was also a claim that the weather was wet but committee chair Sean Ferguson pointed out it was a “dry night.” The committee suspended Aleem’s private hire car drivers’ licence for six weeks. |
