A taxi driver has been left “shocked and frustrated” after his car was set on fire outside his house while his family were sleeping.

Sukhy Sidhu was woken up by his 21-year-old son just after 10.15pm when the alarm for his ring doorbell went off.

He said: “I ran outside to see it and tried to put a bucket of water over it, but it was doing nothing.

“Obviously I was just in shock because you don’t expect it in this area.”

Sukhy, 59, said he recently had the CCTV installed after a front window to his Stanton Road house was smashed in several weeks ago.

He said: “We are afraid, my son is asking me if we’re going to have to move.

“I am still shaking, I don’t know what we will do going forward, do we stay awake at night, what is next?”

He said the “frustrating” aspect was that he has no idea who could have been involved in the fire.

Sukhy said: “I’ve worked hard all my life, I work two jobs now.

“We’re a Christian family, the first thing I did this morning was text my pastor.”

He added: “We have got no enemies, no one to point the finger at, I just don’t know why.”

Sukhy is also worried that this will affect his work as a taxi driver.

He said: “Luckily my company have loaned me a car, I’ll have to see what is going to happen.

“It’s an attack that has put the whole family in shock, now we are just thinking what is next.

“Why did this happen to us?”

Ring doorbell footage of the incident shows a person next to the car as it catches flame.

A spokesperson for Hampshire police said: “We were called at 10.15pm last night to reports of a car on fire on Stanton Road, Southampton.

“Officers are treating the incident as a suspected arson and an investigation is underway.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: “Crews from Redbridge and Totton were called to a vehicle fire in Stanton Road at 22:15 last night.

“Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

“The incident was referred to the police.”
