This is in several different news titles, with the fake taxi angle in some of the headlines.

Another just states in the headline that it was a 'car'. Which it actually was, by the looks of it.

But, as is often the case, the official Merseyside Police news release doesn't mention the t-word until further down.

There's not much here, though, but the scenario and charges seem clear enough. (Although lots of support advice and weblinks for victims, though.)

Although presumably her friends had gotten out at some point, leaving her alone in the car :?

A man has been charged with kidnap and several sex offences after it was reported that a woman was raped inside a car in St Helens.

At around 1am on Sunday 27 September we received a report that a woman got into a vehicle which she believed was a taxi with a group of her friends in Wigan.

The car travelled from Wigan to St Helens town centre where it was reported that the offence took place.

James Paterson, aged 30, of Inglewhite Road, Longridge was charged with two counts of rape, sexual assault, kidnap and assault yesterday, Wednesday 30 September.

He has been remanded into custody until his next court hearing on Wednesday 28 October at Liverpool Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Jamie Heston said: “Although a man has been charged our investigation is ongoing and we are appealing to anyone with more information on what happened on that night or regarding similar incidents to come forward.

“If you have any information, please let us know as we continue with our enquiries. Any information could be vital to our investigation.”

If you have been a victim of sexual assault or rape, you can access specialist support services, which are free of charge and available to anyone. You do not need a referral or to have reported an incident to Merseyside Police before you access these specialist support services.

These services can support you in a variety of ways, including offering a confidential discussion if you are thinking of making a police report, but are unsure what that involves and would like to discuss it.

If you do decide to report to Merseyside Police, you will receive support throughout the investigation, court process and beyond.

In Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral, support is provided by Rape and Sexual Abuse Support (RASA) Merseyside who are available on 0151 558 1801 and, in St Helens and Knowsley, by the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (RASASC) Cheshire and Merseyside who can be contacted on 01925 221 546 or 0330 363 0063.

This is the Mirror's headline take, for example:

So the lady didn't get in the fake cab on her own; she got in it with her mates. :-k
