Glasgow private hire driver warned after assaulting man he accused of being a paedophile

Councillors chose not to suspend the driver's licence but did issue a warning over his future conduct.

A private hire driver who assaulted a man after accusing him of being a paedophile has been given a warning over his future conduct.

Glasgow’s licensing committee decided not to suspend Jamie Jeffrie’s licence, after hearing a complaint from Police Scotland.

Councillors were told Mr Jeffrie had admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Reading Crown Court in June last year.

An officer said the driver and another male had punched the victim, who they had met in a pub in Windsor, to the ground and repeatedly kicked him to the head.

The committee heard the pair had initially been “friendly” with the victim, whose injuries included a fractured eye socket – but Mr Jeffrie later accused him of “being a paedophile”.

Mr Jeffrie was handed a 15-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months, councillors were told. Police Scotland called for his private hire car driver’s licence to be suspended.

The driver told the city’s licensing committee that the victim’s words had been “it doesn’t matter what age they are as long as you don’t get caught”.

His solicitor said the assault was “an isolated and one-off incident”.

“This was in no way connected to his provision as a private hire car driver and thus poses no risk to the public,” he added.

He also told the committee that his client had been “severely dealt with” by the court, with a £2,500 fine and 200 hours of community service.

The committee decided to take no action against Mr Jeffrie, but issued a warning over his future conduct. Bailie Hanif Raja, Labour, recorded his dissent with the ruling.

Apart from the fact it sounds like he's a violent nutter with anger management issues :-o
