Taxi drivers in Breckland are facing tougher enforcement of rules about the condition of vehicles.

The council has suspended the licences of 14 taxi drivers across the district for breaches including driving with smashed windscreens, damaged bodywork and unsafe suspension.

Breckland Council licenses almost 200 taxis in Breckland, with about 140 hackney carriages, which can be flagged down, and about 50 private hire vehicles, which must be pre-booked.

Nigel Burrows, principal environmental health officer at Breckland, said: "Increase in notices has been due to tighter enforcement on the district and ensuring operators/drivers report accidents to their vehicles."

From October this year every vehicle licensed by Breckland must have a new rectangular plate in place of the old half-moon plates.

I can't really see many drivers going around with 'smashed' windscreens. Cracked, perhaps.
