HEADLINE: Blitz on rogue traders

BLACKPOOL is leading the way when it comes to cracking down on rogue traders.

Since April this year a total of 168 enforcement and improvement notices have been handed out as the borough council takes a tough stance against people who do not comply with the law.

Hotels, taxis, and off-licenses have all been targeted as part of a clean-up campaign.

And traders were today warned if they ignore the notices, which target offences under trading standards legislation, health and safety and breaches of licensing conditions, they will face prosecution.

Blackpool's chief Trading Standards officer Tim Coglan said the resort was the only local authority in the country which had a team of multi-skilled enforcement officers able to check up on all aspects of trading laws. He said: "The number of enforcement notices reflects the way that we are targeting our resources more efficiently and we would expect the number of notices we issue to come down as more premises comply with the law.

Rogue taxis were also being targeted with almost 60 per cent of vehicles tested being taken off the road.

Two taxi licences had been revoked for alleged sex offences.

Licensing chairman Coun Norman Hardy said: "Blackpool is leading the way on enforcement.

"It is obvious to see that the strong actions of our officers are working in the town and I think improvements are being made."

Is there really any need for these kind of slanderous remarks Mr GMB, how do you expect decent citizens to respect your views when you come out with stuff like this. Just playing devils advocate here fella

Although I haven't been there for years i have relatives living up there it isn't a bad town it's just the way it gets treated by it's visitors who are generally a very downmarket clientele who descend on it abuse it and dissapear leaving the locals to clean up after it

Yes im sure Mr GBC does have an answer for you and i look forward seeing it, however i feel that it will be somewhat less of a personal insult than yours, i shall leave it at that and view with anticipation.

About the section 75 question yes indeed i have a view and personally i think the sooner its scrapped the better for all of us, however i also think that the government need to pull their finger out in order to bring in a better system which is not biased and suits all licenced trades. Regardless of this there are some unscrupulous operators out there that will find a loop hole and exploit it regardless of what system is bought in, thats life i guess
