Streamline swells to 131 cars as city's biggest taxi firm

THE biggest and oldest taxi firm in York has bought out its rival for an undisclosed sum. Streamline Taxis, based in Cumberland Street, York, has taken over Local Taxis of Layerthorpe, from Patricia Rennison who started the firm with her late husband 25 years ago.

By absorbing Local Taxis' 51 vehicles, its fleet has swelled to 131. Bob Gilbert, business manager for Streamline Taxis, said: "We wanted to give a better service to the customer and broaden our range. "We are now by far and away the largest in York."

The fleet also boasts four Fiat Doblo wheelchair accessible vehicles bought by the drivers two months ago. All the drivers are selfemployed running their own vehicles. Mr Gilbert said: "We started with a telephone strapped to a lamp post in Museum Street in 1937.

Today there are 34 shareholders plus a six man driving team who run the company, including chairman David Rhodes, credit controller Peter Fannon; secretary Mark Wilson, financial controller, Danny Cullen, and committee member Mark Burbidge.

Don't know much about the firm [they could be on another planet for me] or the take over, I truely believe something is going on, mmm. GNER Contracts York stn maybe/ more than likely, comes to mind, thats what it all about.

Forces regrouping and taking over enemy positions. there's something fishy going on, drivers from Local taxis who was taken over by Streamline drivers leaving like there's no tomorrow, Local Taxis was an easy going firm, popular with the pensioners cos they was cheap and they kept going.

all I can say is York stn taxis can't cope with the railway stn rank credits, contract up for renew next year, not enough of them [stn hacks] on the radio circuit, most have slung their radios in and gone solo except the 39 shareholders, so they must have at least 38 radios, thats the total amount of stn taxi shareholders.

will have to quiz drivers who have big ears

not only is one of the Streamline directors an owner and financial director, but also has the monopoly with taxi meters, also owns a tyre fitting company, and does taxi repairs and run a fleet of mini buses.

Streamline is not a company I would rate, ok been on the go for a long time, but the most rated top PH company in York is Fleetways taxis, but they don't now have any hacks now, if they have cars sat at base you know the jobs quite, which is very rare for them.

What the [edited by admin] are you on about?

Did you actually read the story?

The woman sold the business.

All drivers operate their own vehicles and are self employed.

If a person buys their own PHV and rents a radio he is self employed.

If a person wishes to hire a vehicle off someone he is self employed.

I quote the following from the story;

Quote:
All the drivers are selfemployed running their own vehicles.

Did you notice the 'their own vehicles' bit?

If I go to AVIS or EUROCAR HIRE and hire a vehicle from them I am not working under the direction of anyone but SAT NAV.

You dont actually know what the situation at the firm is, especially when you made the post, so why the prejudgement?

The best guess I have is that Streamline is a firm owned by a number of drivers who decided to get together and form a co-operative. I dont quite know what gave me that impression....perhaps it was this;
Quote:
Today there are 34 shareholders plus a six man driving team who run the company,

As for maggies anti union legislation, why dont you get those 103MP's of yours to overturn it? Perhaps your influence is errrm not as influential as you would lead us to believe?

I'd need to see a transcript of the case.

I think our solicitors are fine, but thank you for the advice.

Well I hope you get them persuaded, I like to think of the mid 1970's when my grandad was on strike as a train driver, those evenings at my grandparents house, coal fire (except there was nofcuking coal because the miners were on strike), candlelight (because the electric board were on strike) bring back memories of my youth.

No problem, the TOA has grown sufficiently enough in size to now withdraw services because we think theres too many taxis.

Great thing democracy, if we dont get our way, we'll withdraw labour, dont know why we didnt think of it earlier really :wink:

Not sure what half those posts were about but i think our man stinky is in the best position to come up with the real story

If the drivers own their own vehicles they are self employed and can choose what radio circuit they belong to but if i were them i'd give the new owners a bit of time to prove their worth or not as the case may be

You're wrong, the LA set the fares, not the driver or proprietor.
