UK Newsquest Regional Press - This is Wiltshire October 3, 2006 Tuesday HEADLINE: Drive for signs on minicabs is hotting up DATELINE: Swindon Advertiser MINICABS could be forced to carry signs on their sides in a bid to deter illegal operators by as soon as November 1. The council's Private Hire And Hackney Carriage Licensing Sub-Committee will meet on Thursday to agree to the wording of the signs and the start day. The committee is expected to agree to the signs reading "Private hire insurance invalid if not pre-booked." If the wording of the signs is agreed then they could be effective from November 1. The move follows a push by Coun David Glaholm, pictured left, calling for minicabs to be more obviously labelled. Private hire vehicles or minicabs are available only by booking in advance. They are separate from hackney carriages, better known as black cabs, which can be flagged down as well as booked in advance. Coun Glaholm (Lab, Penhill) said the new rules were a common sense attempt to make it more obvious to revellers which vehicles were safe to hire.
