DOZENS of disgruntled taxi drivers are challenging South Lakeland District Council in court next month in a bid to overturn new legislation that the council says will make cabs clearer and safer for users.

Alexander Angus, a self-employed taxi driver from Windermere, was joined by a crowd of angry cabbies at South Lakeland Magistrates Court on Monday as he formally lodged an appeal against an SLDC decision that will require all the district's taxis to feature large signs on their doors.

Mr Angus, who has the backing of at least 50 drivers, says the move will mean added expense for taxi firms, who he says have already seen licence fees spiral in recent years. He also said the appearance of the large stick-on logos was unacceptable and is now preparing to tackle SLDC solicitors over the proposals at a hearing on October 24.

If his appeal is unsuccessful, owners of hackney carriages and private hire cars will need to fork out £32.50 per car to meet the new requirements, which include signs featuring the council's logo and the vehicle's licence details on both the driver and front passenger doors, and an internal identity disc.

A valid point, but I think what the councils are trying to do is to make sure that the top light is on a local taxi, not an out-sider.
