Post subject:  Tuk Tuk Inquiry

As this inquiry was held in my manor I thought it would be rude not to go and sit with my fellow cabbies from along the coast. :D Actually I sat at the back out of everyone's way. 8-[

Anyway it started at around 10.00am and finished just after 6.00pm.

Could write pages about the inquiry, but will keep it simple. Was impressed with the Brighton trade's barrister, must have cost them a small fortune, but IMO was money well spent. Tuk Tuks barrister was a pillock, and was surprised that the Brighton trade had stumped up for a pukka brief.

Three surveys were conducted on Tuk Tuk's time-table. The first was a VOSA survey who found they only met 45% of their time-table. VOSA also saw evidence of touting, and evidence of Tuk Tuks making up their own routes. All, in VOSA's view, in breach of several acts. Mr VOSA said that he had done dozens of such investigations, and the Tuk Tuk operation was the worst one he had ever seen.

Next was the survey paid for by the Brighton trade. Again they only met around 40 (ish)% of their time-table. Again evidence of touting and leaving the set route was given. Again it was the worst bus operating this particular firm, Buccanna I think, had ever come across.

The third survey was the beauty. This one was paid for by Tuk Tuks, and surprisingly they came up a 70% compliance of their time-table. Loads of smiles from the Tuk Tuk benches. Well that was until the Brighton trade's brief pointed out that Tuk Tuks had told the survey people when and where to survey.

No doubt many trades up and down the country would welcome them doing a SUD survey.

Anyway this then started to drag on with a lot of to'ing and thro'in, including Mr Tuk Tuk admitting taking 6 passengers.

The situation now is the Traffic Com is going to take 2/3 weeks to report, so let's all hope no-one gets killed in one in the meantime.

Its been highlighted many times on TDO that the only way to get at bus companies is to provide evidence of failed timetable schedules and plying for hire. The guys in Brighton have done everything right and they now need to keep on top of the situation and not relax their observations just because they await the Commissioners report?
