he Star (Sheffield) October 9, 2006 HEADLINE: Operation to tackle border crime proves a big success AN OPERATION to tackle cross border crime in Penistone has been hailed a success by police. Number plate recognition technology was used to track cars on the A628 close to the Derbyshire border for four hours on September 27. A total of 74 vehicles were stopped and enforcement action is set to be taken after: Three disqualified drivers were caught, one of whom was also wanted in Derby for theft. Three vehicles were seized. Eight taxi drivers were found to be infringing licensing laws. Eight vehicles were found to be faulty. One driver was fined for not wearing a seatbelt and one for not displaying a tax disc. Operation Border was organised by Andy Stevenson from Penistone Safer Neighbourhood Team. He said: "It was a high-profile operation on a very busy arterial road into the county designed to reassure people that we are trying our best to tackle crime in the area." Cars were stopped if their number plate was flagged up on police computers. As well as police officers, Barnsley and Sheffield council officials were on hand to check taxi permits and Ministry of Transport inspectors were also present. Safety concerns over high winds saw the operation called off early. ........................................................... |

The driver who was fined for not wearing a seat belt, wants to appeal on the grounds that he does not have to, and also that it states that in the seat-belt law pamphlet that was given out by the police when seat belt wearing became law |

The operation wasn't only targetted at taxi drivers, thus I susepct the driver in question wasn't a cabbie. |

In this day and age if your not legitimate and you drive or park a vehicle on the road you are asking for trouble. Regards JD |

It was more the licensing issues I was thinking about, which of course could include insurance/tax/MOT. |

Well presumably they weren't only using the plate recognition system but were also looking at other aspects. |
